for ice cream, tea and pet food products are being produced in Italy in large volumes.
The primary focus here is on consistently high quality standards and reliable deliveries.

Improvements have been made in many areas:

• Renovation of the exhaust air cleaning system to meet the latest
environmental standards and to recycle all of the solvents
• New 9-colour rotogravure printing machine with cutting-edge monitoring
and quality equipment
• Increase in lamination capacities including triplex lamination,
e.g. retort applications
• Modernisation of the entire cutting hall
• New logistics centre to improve the workflow
• High degree of automation in production using robots

COVER STORY

From the initial idea to

the final packaging –
We see ourselves as a full service provider of innovative solutions
What’s the first question that needs to be answered when designing new packaging? It’s quite
simple: Why should the customer choose this packaging on the shelf? Which design and which
opening features will fascinate the customer, so that they purchase the packaging again? That’s
what Agata Surdziel says, and she knows what she’s talking about – the packaging designer
has been working at Huhtamaki for thirteen years and has been involved in many patents.

Agata Surdziel studied industrial The global network is often consulted – to identify the needs and

sity. Then as now, she is primarily
interested in form and function,
as she explains: “The graphic de-
sign of the packaging, by that I
mean the image that we print onto
the packaging material using an
rotogravure printing machine, ge-
nerally comes from our customers.

We provide the suggestions for the three-dimensional design with

extra features, such as easy opening, resealing, and so on.” Over
the years Agata has created new packaging for many different
products – from ice cream and laundry detergents right through
to coffee and pharmaceutical products.

… and the winner is: Lamineo from Huhtamaki
A tremendous success: our innovative 3-layer laminate specially developed for the coffee industry –
Lamineo – has been awarded the Alufoil Trophy 2018 in the Resource Efficiency category.

The new laminate packaging material, which is produced using a extrusion lamination process rather than solvent
or solvent-free lamination, reduces the amount of PE by up to 20% without any loss of performance or rigidity.

“The coffee bag, which contains this new aluminium foil laminate, is an impressive
example of what has been achieved here,” said the jury, which consisted of leading
industry experts. “The look, feel and printability are first class. The samples offered
for inspection had excellent rigidity, were easy to open, and the material saving is
significant, whilst still offering good machinability. This is a classic, resource-efficient
development.”

The material can be used on any current form fill seal machine, without any need for modification or any loss of production speed.
In addition, the adhesive-free lamination helps to reduce the non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) during production, which
is a major challenge for materials that come into contact with food.

M.A.D.E. and CFIA in France

Both M.A.D.E. in Paris and CFIA in Rennes are becoming increasingly
important trade fairs for the food packaging industry. In March this year,
Huhtamaki participated in both of the established food trade fairs in
France for the second time.

We enjoyed the exciting conversations and discussions we had with ex-

isting and potential customers. We heard that sustainability is right at the
top of the agenda for everyone. Many of our customers have set them-
selves the goal of using only recyclable packaging for their products in the
medium term. In light of the excellent feedback, both trade fairs are firmly
in the diary for next year once again.
