PROJECT CONTEXT

India is home to approximately 31 million orphan children, according to the United Nations Children’s
Fund (UNICEF). The UN defines “orphan” as a child who has lost one or both parents. However,
many children without parental care have been abandoned by a living parent or parents.
Underprivileged children including orphans, semi-orphans and vulnerable children are subject to
systematic deprivation covering a wide spectrum of socio-economic parameters like lack of shelter,
lack of access to health services and livelihood opportunities. These vulnerable children are also easy
preys to all kinds of exploitations.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the implementing agency established an orphanage to provide
crucial support to abandoned and homeless children. The organization provides these children with
free accommodation, food and other basic amenities of life. All the children are enrolled in schools.
The organization manages the expenses from donations and contributions made by individuals;
however those are barely enough as there is much to provide for.

PROPOSED PROJECT
Through the proposed project, quality learning and development opportunities shall be provided to
underprivileged children of the orphanage run by the organization. The children shall be provided
tutorial classes after school hours to reinforce their learning at school. The children shall be provided
food, clothing and other basic amenities through the proposed project.
Considering the background of the children, the process shall aim at maintaining a child-friendly and
gender sensitive education in an environment where the human dignity of the child is respected and
where his rights in relation to education are put on the forefront. Accordingly, the project
implementation team will reach out to the children, their teachers in addition to advocating for and
preparing the right environment for the practice of rights of children, while sensitizing community,
decision makers and the public at large. In this connection, appropriate awareness generation material
shall be developed in addition to developing the right teaching/ learning activity modules that will
facilitate the delivery of a child friendly education.
