The impact of parenting styles on psychological well-being and locus of control of university
students.

The Analysis of the Issue (Please state the subject which you will deal with in your study
and your theory.) (Minimum 75, maximum 300 words)

This study examines the impact of parenting styles on psychological well-being and locus of
control. The title of study has some key points- parenting style, psychological well-being, locus of
control.
Parenting Style: A constellation of attitudes that are communicated to the child and create an
emotional climate in which the parent’s behaviors are expressed (Darling & Steinberg, 1993).
Parenting styles are defined as the behaviors, attitudes, and values parents use to determine how
they interact with their children (Mussen, 1983). There are three parenting styles
authoritarian/autocratic, the authoritative/democratic, and the permissive/laissez-faire. Each style
demonstrates a particular relationship that occurs between the parents and children at a specific
point in time. Each parenting style and the research related to each to analyze which parenting
style may be the most effective for positively impacting psychological well-being.
Psychological well-being: Psychological well-being refers to how individuals self-evaluate and
their ability to fulfill certain aspects of their lives, such as relationships, support, and work (Amato,
1994; Flouri & Buchanan, 2003; Knoester, 2003; Roberts & Bengtson, 1993; Wilkinson, 2004).
Locus of control: A person’s expectancies for internal (i.e., by oneself) versus external (i.e., by
fate, chance, luck, or powerful others) control of reinforcement (Jolley & Spiel Berger, 1973).
Internal: The expectancy one has that an event is contingent upon his or her own behavior.
External: The expectancy one has that an event is the result of luck, fate, chance or powerful others.
Research Method (Please provide details concerning the methods of research you are planning to use
in this study. For example, in depth interviews, observations, surveys, trials, etc.) (Minimum 75,
maximum 300 words)

Participants: 300 university students from different university chose for this study, aged between
18-30. Respondents will be selected by using random sampling method. The participants were
from different disciplines like BA, B.Sc. and Engineering and they were from first to final year.
Methods: Questionnaire survey method is use for collecting data. This study finds out the
relationship between parenting style with psychological well-being and locus of control.
Correlation method will be used for exploring the relationships.
The Parenting Style Inventory: A parenting style inventory use for this study to measure about
perception of the students about their parent’s behavior. Here the perception of the students is
important. It asses perceived parenting style of the subjects with regard to three dimensions such
as authoritarian, authoritative and permissive. It consists of 30 items in which responses were
elicited in a five-point Likert scale. Scoring of each parenting style was done independently.
Psychological Well Being Scale: A well-defined psychological well-being scale is use in this study
to measure student’s psychological well-being. Different items of the scale identify student’s well-
being.
Locus of Control Scale: A locus of control scale will use to measure locus of control of students,
which consists of 40 items indicating external and internal locus of control. The 40-items form of
the Nowicki–Strickland Locus of Control Scale (Nowicki & Strickland, 1973) adapted by Korkut
(1986) into Turkish culture, was administered to determine the role of external/internal locus of
control. Here the respondents were asked to make yes or no options to the given statements.

Academic contribution

There are many pragmatic explorations available in context to highlight the Socio-cultural,
ethnicity practice and all things considered setting of university students. There is no study was
conducted in the impact of parenting styles on psychological well-being and locus of control of
university students yet. Along these lines, the study will be considered as a pioneer investigation.
Parenting styles positively or negatively affects students sense of psychological well-being, locus
of control, self-esteem, self-evaluation and peer group relationships. Parenting style greatly impact
student thinking and learning as well. The authoritative/democratic parenting style influences
university students, leading to positive developmental outcomes, positive evaluations, while also
positively influencing internal locus of control. It is closely related to student performance at
university and their physical and mental well-being. It impacts on students learning, decision
making, problem solving, and leadership skill. On the other hand, External locus of control has a
wide range of negative effects on both mental and physical health, associated with learning,
leaderships, memory poor decision making, antisocial behavior, lack of self-confident. So, this
study helps us to comprehend about psychological well-being and locus of control of university
students in present condition of society. It is likewise valuable for university students to help them
to measure psychological well-being and locus of control. The study may valuable for maladjusted
university students to help them to regenerate their advancement issue and that will make them
more adaptive in society. Subsequently, this study will help those university students who are
connected with mental health profession, social worker, teacher such as (Psychologist, sociologist,
anthropologist, humanist, instructor, clinical analyst, geographer) and policy maker to give
intercession program and make powerful strides to encourage their improvement. Therefore, it is
helpful to look and comprehend the modification issue of tribal and non-tribal students in
Bangladesh.

Literature Review (Please state the principal academic resources which have been written in the field
of this study and which you will utilise.) (Minimum 75, maximum 300 words)

Uma, k. And Manikandan, k. (2014) conducted a research on parenting style as a moderator of

locus of control, self-esteem and academic Stress among adolescents. Results show that
authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles did not show any interaction with locus of control
and self-esteem in relation to academic stress. Permissive parenting style is interacting with locus
of control and academic stress.
Toon W. Taris & Inge A. Bok (1997) if parents show their involvement during the first sixteen years of the
lives of their children, these children are more likely to develop an internal locus of control.
Buri and colleagues (1987) discovered that parental nurturance associated with the authoritative
parenting style is related significantly to adolescents' self-esteem.
Doyle and Markiewicz (2005) noted that parenting does affect adolescents’ ability to adjust, with
parental warmth being an aspect of the authoritative parenting style and an indicator of adolescent
self-esteem.
Lisa A. McClun and Kenneth W. Merrell (1998) in study, participants include 198 students. Participants
who perceived their parents as being Authoritative had a significantly more internal locus of control
orientation than subjects who perceived their parents as either Permissive or Authoritarian.
