concert promoters into a behe-
moth that eventually became Live
Nation, is back – but this time he’s
investing in electronic dance mu-
sic and the companies that stage
EDM events. And it could pit him
against the company he spawned.
Sillerman is looking to acquire
independent companies that
throw EDM festivals, DJ parties
and other events, according to
the New York Times. He told the
paper he is in negotiations with
“up to 50” such companies and
has tentative agreements with

would comment on the story.
Neither was it possible to get
comment from MAMA Group

the Apollo and became part
of HMV in a £65 million deal
in 2010.

£2.5 million a year – fetched
as much as £32 million.

Huge TV Audience
For Jubilee Gig
The BBC attracted its biggest Brit-
ish TV audience of the year with
the Queen’s diamond jubilee staged
outside Buckingham Palace June 4.
The concert, which had a
star-studded lineup put together
by Gary Barlow that included
Paul McCartney, Elton John,
Stevie Wonder, Kylie Minogue,
Tom Jones, Robbie Williams,
and Madness drew an average
audience of 14.7 million, peaking
at 17 million viewers.
“It was the highest rating
program across all channels
this year,” a BBC spokeswoman
confirmed after the show had
attracted as much as 65.4 per-
cent of the UK viewing public.
The figures notched up by
Britain’s public broadcaster easily
beat the 11.9 million that ITV, its
independent rival, attracted for
the final of “Britain’s Got Talent.”

A day earlier, the Beeb’s cover-
age of the parades and street parties
celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s
60 years on the throne drew nearly
12 million viewers, or about 60 per-
cent of the British TV audience.
The pageantry dominated the
screen throughout the June 1-2
weekend, and for the two public
holidays that followed it.
Sky and CNN also gave hours of
screen time to Britain’s four-day
bash, devoting a larger percent-
age of their airtime to the protests
that inevitably came from groups
of disgruntled anti-monarchists.
The BBC may have broken
records with its wall-to-wall
coverage, but sections of the
British media were far from
impressed with the quality of it.
The Daily Mail claimed its
readers were angry because the
BBC had ruined the spectacular
fireworks display that closed the
concert by running the lengthy
programme credits over it.
The paper’s readers were
apparently already reeling from
a clip when presenter Fearne
Cotton, in a bid to show how
British commerce was benefiting
from the occasion, showed view-

ers a sick-bag with the Queen’s
face printed on it.
The BBC was accused of “shame-
ful” behaviour and “failing to reflect
the gravity of the historic event.”

Digital Spy agreed the main prob-
lem with the concert coverage
was the picture quality, suggest-
ing the blurred image was caused
by using equipment that repeated
a frame every second.
Southbank
Tops For PRS
London’s Southbank Centre,
which includes the Royal Festival
Hall and the Queen Elizabeth
Hall, is the UK’s leading music
venue according to PRS For Music.
The royalty collection society
analysed data from more than
10,000 live music events in 2011.
The resulting report showed
the 422 events in Southbank
Centre venues attracted more
than 1 million people.
It also reinforced the argument
that live music is at the heart of
Britain’s creative industries, with
the shows producing an annual
revenue of £3.9 billion.
“I am thrilled to see so many
cultural centres featured in the
analysis, from the newly opened
Kings Place in London and The Sage
in Gateshead to the Royal Northern
College of Music in Manchester,”
said PRS chief exec Robert Ashcroft.
At press time is wasn’t clear
what criteria PRS used to compile
its ratings. London’s O2 Arena,
the world’s busiest venue, didn’t
figure in its Top 10 UK venues,
while The Sage – a 2,000-
capacity performance space
in Gateshead – came second
behind the Southbank Centre.
The other venues in the Top 10

mingham, The Stables in Milton

stage was the reason for crowd
safety problems during Limp
Bizkit’s set at Ursynalia Students
Festival in Warsaw June 1, the
band says.
On three occasions vocalist
Fred Durst interrupted the band’s
set to draw attention to the plight
of fans being crushed at the front
of the 30,000 crowd and spoke
of the lack of barriers.
“Great show in Warsaw,
but the people getting crushed
and passing out didn’t need to
happen,” guitarist Wes Borland
wrote on Twitter. “Festivals
should always use T barricades.”

responded to a request for com-
ment at press time.
It’s the second time in a year
that a headline act has had prob-
lems with a Polish festival over
the failure to provide barriers.

Last August, a potentially life-
threatening crowd crush was nar-
rowly avoided during a Prodigy
show at Przystanek Woodstock,
considered to be Europe’s biggest
free festival.
The act’s production team said
there weren’t enough barriers for
an event that claims to have had
at least 500,000 on site.
The festival says the pit barrier
it provided at Prodigy’s insistence
was the cause of the crowd crush,
which left up to 100 fans injured.
Festival organiser Jurek
Owsiak went on Polish TV com-
plaining the act ruined the event
because of its demands, while
Prodigy manager John Fairs said
Przystanek was “the most unsafe
festival” he’s seen in 25 years.
Other acts on the Ursynalia bill
June 1-3 included Slayer, Billy
Talent, Nightwish, In Flames,
and Mastodon.

Neuchatel Openair Festival
marked the opening of the Swiss
festival season by pulling around
9,000 per day to the city’s Na-
tional Expo site May 31 to June 3.
Cyrill Villemin from the festival
organising team says he’s happy
with the figures, even though
they were about 250 per day
down on last year.
He said the difficulty with
Festi’neuch, as the festival’s more
commonly known, is striking the
balance between the high-budget
headliners and a good supporting
cast throughout the bill.
“Sometimes when we have
booked the big headliners, the
crowd have been more impressed
with some of the lesser-known
acts,” he explained.
This year’s Festi’neuch bill
included Marilyn Manson, Alpha
Blondy, Amadou & Mariam,
Morcheeba, and Sophie Hunger.
Festi’neuch’s bright start may
be the beginning of a decent Swiss
festival season, as the 30,000-
capacity Openair St Gallen has
sold out a month in advance.
That’s the fastest sellout the
36-year-old event has managed
since it also sold out with a
month to go in 1996.
The acts on the Openair St
Gallen bill June 28 to July 1 in-
clude Die Toten Hosen, Incubus,
Mumford & Sons, Deadmau5,
Paolo Nutini, Florence & The
Machine, and The Kooks.

Dragons
Get Second Wind
Estonian indie-rock act Ewert and
The Two Dragons appears to have
gotten a second wind and surged
back into the lead in this year’s Eu-
ropean Talent Exchange Programme.
Having temporarily lost the
lead to Spector, which is doing
best of the three UK acts in the
Top 10, The Dragons have pulled
in three more festivals and now
top the list with 11 shows.
Spector and Dope D.O.D.
have nine shows apiece, and
The Computers – also from the
UK – has eight.
The Top 10 have between
them picked up 82 slots at this
summer’s European festivals
through the ETEP programme.
Overall this year’s ETEP has
so far resulted in the 50 or so
ETEP festivals, which include
many of Europe’s biggest out-
doors, confirming a total of
236 shows to 88 of the acts that
appeared at this year’s showcase
in Groningen, The Netherlands.
That smashes the previous
record set in 2009, when 75 acts
shared 214 shows.
The new Central European Talent
Exchange Programme, an ETEP off-
shoot set up with European Union
funding, has so far seen 12 acts
secure 15 shows between them.
Grimus from Romania is doing
best with three shows on festivals
in Serbia, Czech Republic and
Hungary.

Primavera Festival has smashed
its attendance record by attracting
117,000 people to Barcelona’s Parc
del Fòrum over three days, easily
beating the 101,000 it pulled for its
10th-anniversary edition in 2010.
The 2010 edition beat the pre-
vious record crowd of 76,000 in
2009, which means the Spanish
outdoor has strong claims to be
Europe’s fastest-growing festival.
