Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer born in Spain in the 1500s. He sailed with Pedro Arias Davila at a young age in the early 1500s and later joined Francisco Pizarro in his conquest of the Inca Empire in Peru, where he witnessed the death of the Inca emperor Atahualpa. De Soto led his own expedition through what is now the southeastern United States from 1539 to 1543, becoming the first European to explore and map the Mississippi River. He covered over 6,400 kilometers through 15 states before dying in Louisiana in 1542.
