“The Indolence of the Filipino”

Summary:

This article was written by Jose Rizal. It was published in La Solidaridad in Madrid in
1890. It talks about Rizal’s response to the accusation of Filipino indolence.

Highlight:

“Man works for an object. Remove the object and you reduce him to inaction”

Reaction:

The oppressors condemn our ancestors of being an indolent people. I agree that some of
the Filipinos are indolent but they are the cause of it and not all Filipino at that time are indolent.
Our ancestors were hardworking people but the oppressors took their liberty and misguided
them. The way they treated them made them indolent. They took the object or purpose and
reduce our ancestors to inaction as I highlighted above. Abuses and corruptions ultimately faded
the true Filipino values. If they were not being fooled by the wrong doctrines, educated properly
and have their liberty back, they would still have their own ways because education and freedom
is the cure for Filipino indolence.
