WEEK – 3

TOPIC – Insects in garden

 Earthworm
 Snail
 Ladybird
 Bee
 Butterfly

OBJECTIVES:-

 To know insects which one easily found in garden.


 To know their feathers are physically characteristic.
 To know their tool in the garden.

SKILLS:-

 Making observation
 Making comparisons
 Following instructions

INTRODUCTION:-

 Insects are small animals.


 Insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts head thorax and abdomen.
 Most insects have 2 pairs of wings and a pair of antennae / feelers.
 Most insects crawl but some can fly and jump
 Some insects are helpful to people
 Spiders are not insects. Spiders have 8 legs and just 2 body parts.

EARTHWORM:-

 An earthworm is a tube shaped segmented worm


 Earthworm help to increase the amount of air and water that gets into the soil.
 They breakdown organic matter like leaves and grass into things that plants can use.
 When they eat, they leaves behind casting that are very valuable type of fertilizer.
 Earthworms have no eyes but they have light receptors, so they can detect between light
and dark.
 Earthworm don’t have ears, they sense vibrations.
 If they dries out they die.

SNAIL:-

 Snail can leave in land, sea and ponds.


 Snail eats leaves, stems and flowers.
 Snail can live 5-25 years.
 As they move along snails leave behind a trail of mucus which acts as a lubricant to
reduce surface friction.
 The common garden snail is regarded as an agriculture and garden pest as it eats the
leaves and stems of crops.

LADYBIRD:-

 Ladybird also called as ladybugs


 Beneficial insect because they feed on plant pests
 They are in red, yellow and orange color.
 They are not poisonous to human but can bits
 The can have toxic effects on some animals.
 They smell bed (foul)
 Ladybugs live up to 1 years

BEE:-

 Bee haves 5 eyes and 6 legs.


 Honey bees live in large groups called colonies.
 There are 3 types of bees in a colony. Male(drones), workers and queen.
 Male leaves 40-50 days and queen leaves 2-5 years.
 Queen lay up to 1500 eggs a day. In her lifetime she lay about 1 million eggs.

BUTTERFLY:-

 Butterfly is an insect,
 Butterfly have the typical 4 stage lifecycle
i. Egg
ii. Larva (caterpillars)
iii. Pupa
iv. Butterfly
 Butterfly grows inside the egg for about 4 days, larva for about 2 more weeks, pupa last
about 10 days and adult butterfly last from 2-6 week
 Most adult butterfly drink nector from flowers through their tongues, wgich fuction
much like straws.
Activities – Make an insect model.

Earthworm – An origami earthworm

Materials – color paper, glue, skewer, marker

Direction –

 Cut the color paper in the shape of ice-cream stick


 Fold it to make a frill it.
 Through marker make face on it
 Use glue to stick skewer and the last fold to move it.

Snail:-

Materials – color paper, hot glue gun toothpick, thermocol balls.

Direction –

 Roll color paper diganaly to make pipe structure


 Press that pipe into flat
 Roll the pipe from one side to make a shell of snail and use glue to stick it. Roll it 2/3
only.
 Now roll 1/3 from front to make face of snail and glue it.
 Use toothpick to make antenna of it.
 Put thermacol balls on top of toothpick to make eyes.
Ladybird:-

 White, black and red color paper, pipe clearner, glue

Direction:-

 Cut black paper in two size a big circle for body and a small circle for face.
 Join face and body with help of glue.
 Cut red paper into semi circle to make wings and join it with the body with the help of
glue
 Cut small white circle to make eyes and paste on the face.
 Cut black small clots to put on the wings and paste in on wings
 Cut pipe cleaner into small pieces and glue it on face
Bee – Finger puppet

Materials:-

 Yellow and white cardstock paper


 ¾ inch circle punch (1/2 inch might be better for toodlers)
 Googly eyes
 Black and pink marker
 Glue
 White string

Direction:-

 Start by cutting out the pieces we need for our bee finger puppet. We need a 21/2 inch
circle, a 3 inch circle cut out of your yellow cardstock paper and 2 wing shapes cut out of
your white cardstock paper
 Draw black stripes on your larger circle. Then use your ¾ inch circle punch to cut out
two holes at the bottom of it, alignment with your black stripes.
 Glue the smaller yellow circle onto black striped yellow circle, make size the finger holes
are at the bottom of circle. Then glue your white wings on the sides of your bee body.
 Glue your googly eyes onto your face and use your pink marker to draw a smile.
 Lastly, fold your string in half to make a V and glue in onto the back of your bee head for
antennae.
