CABLE CLEATS AND INTERMEDIATE RESTRAINTS


1. Manufacturer

3. Codes & Standards


a. Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints shall comply with the performance
requirements in Article 398.2(d) of NFPA-70-2005, The National Electrical Code
b. Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints (where used) shall be classified, tested and
certified according to the European Specification EN-50368:2003, Cable Cleats for
Electric Installations, as follows:
i. Classified according to material as
1. Metallic, or
2. Composite (e.g. metallic Cable Cleat with an LSF liner)
ii. Classified according to resistance to impact as ‘Very Heavy’ (i.e. greater than
6.7kG @ 300mm)
iii. Classified by an independent third-party testing laboratory in relation to
resistance to electromechanical forces as follows:
1. Category 1 (i.e. no failure that will affect the intended function of holding
the cables in place), or
2. Category 2 (i.e. cables and Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints shall
be intact and re-usable after sustaining two successive short circuits, and
there shall be no cuts or damage to the outer cable sheath, and the cables
shall meet the requirements of the voltage withstand test)
3. The vendor shall also declare
a. The values of IPEAK and ISC-RMS for the aforementioned short circuit
classification
b. The arrangement depicting the spacing between the Cable Cleats
and intermediate restraints
c. The cable configuration (i.e. trefoil, flat, etc.) utilized to obtain the
short circuit classification
d. The spacing between cables in the aforementioned configuration
e. The outside diameter of the cable utilized
iv. Classified according to temperature
1. Maximum temperature for permanent application must be at least +60°C
2. Minimum temperature for permanent application must be at least -40°C
v. Classified according to flame application limits where the flame application time
must be at least 120 seconds.
vi. Marked with the manufacturer’s or responsible vendor’s name, logo or
trademark, along with the product identification

4. Short circuit Rating

a. The maximum mechanical force between conductors during exposure to a short circuit
(equation recognized by EN-50368:2003) is stated as:

Ft = (0.17 x IPEAK2) / S

Where:
Ft = Maximum Force on Conductor (N/m)
IPEAK = 1st Cycle Peak Asymmetrical Short Circuit Current (kA)
S = Spacing between conductor centers (meters)

b. The manufacturer will deliver short circuit mechanical force calculations in accordance
with EN 50368:2003 for the following:
i. The specified project application using the manufacturer recommended cleat
spacing
ii. The application listed in the independent third-party test certificate
iii. The calculations will clearly indicate the following:
1. Ft = Maximum Force on Conductor (N/m)
2. IPEAK = 1st Cycle Peak Asymmetrical Short Circuit Current (kA)
3. S = Spacing between conductor centers (meters)
4. Cable outer diameter used in calculation (meters)
c. The calculated mechanical force between conductors for the specified project
application must be less than or equal to the forces resulting from the certified test
report for the same EN 50368:2003 short circuit protection category (i.e. Category 1 or
Category 2).
d. Short circuit tolerance shall be documented by an independent third-party test certificate
from a nationally or internationally certified testing laboratory. Manufacturer self-
certification will not be accepted.
e. If only RMS short circuit values are known for the specified project application, the
manufacturer shall apply the following formula to calculate the maximum mechanical
force on the conductors:

1. Ft = [0.17 x (ISC-RMS x 2.2)2] / S

ii. Where:
1. ISC-RMS = RMS Short Circuit Current (kA)
2. IPEAK = ISC-RMS x 2.2

f. Test certificates shall document the final physical condition of the cables, Cable Cleats
and intermediate restraints after the short circuit test(s).
i. The Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints shall be intact with no missing
metallic parts (including mounting, fastening and closure hardware and devices).
ii. The Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints shall be reusable, and capable of
removal and reinstallation.
iii. There shall be no cuts or damage to the outer sheath of the cable caused by
Cable Cleats or intermediate restraints as a result of excessive cable movement
during the test.
iv. Cables shall successfully pass the specified voltage withstand test if Category 2
short circuit test has been carried out.

v. Any missing parts or damage as stated above will cause the Cable Cleats and
intermediate restraints to be deemed unacceptable for the specified project
application.
g. Test certificates shall clearly state whether the subject Cable Cleats and intermediate
restraints are certified to either EN 50368:2003 Category 1 or Category 2 resistance to
electromechanical force.

5. Product Features
a. The use of integral liners is recommended for Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints
in order to:
i. Cushion cables from the magnetic forces arising during fault currents
ii. Protect cables from chafing against the Cable Cleat frames, intermediate
restraint frames and mounting system in areas subject to recurring vibration
iii. Protect cables from chafing against the mounting system between two modules
subject to the differential movement (common on offshore structures and marine
vessels)
iv. Protect the cables from the extreme movement found in high-shock installations
(e.g. military and seismic applications)
v. Restrain cables from axial movement during periods of thermal elongation
b. For applications requiring the use of mounting surface adapters (e.g. mounting the cleat
around a non-perforated ladder tray rung), the adapters shall ideally be integral to the
cleat frame.
c. Cable Cleats shall have ‘range-take’ capability to accommodate the manufacturing
tolerances common to electrical cable manufacturing.

6. Materials of Construction
a. Metallic or composite cleats shall be aluminum or non-magnetic 316L marine grade
stainless steel (including brackets, mounting adapters and any permanently mounted
manufacturer supplied installation and fastening means).
b. Liners shall be low-smoke, low-fume, zero halogen, polymeric material with UV
stabilization for use in high salt, marine outdoor (e.g. exposed to sunlight) locations.
c. Certain applications (e.g. chemical laden environments) may require the use of
specialized finishes or coatings. The manufacturer shall propose alternate finishes or
coatings as required.

7. Documentation
a. The following documentation shall accompany every proposal:
i. A copy of the relevant independent third-party short circuit test certificate
ii. The manufacturer’s short circuit mechanical force calculations in accordance with
EN 50368:2003 for the following:
1. The specified project application using the manufacturer recommended
cleat and restraint spacing
2. The Cable Cleat application documented in the third-party test certificate
iii. Data sheets for the recommended Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints
iv. Installation guides for the recommended Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints
v. Technical drawings of the Cable Cleats and intermediate restraints.
