NON-ROUTINE PROBLEM

Patters and Algebra

Class 5 – Group 6

Problem:

Liza, a vendor bought a box of apples for P56. When she opened the box, she found
that 2 pieces were not fit to be sold. If she sells the rest at P2 more than the buying price,
she gets a profit of P10 for these remaining apples. What is the original price of each apple?

Solution:

Let x= the number of remaining apples

y= the total number of apples

1. Solve for the number of remaining apples.

2x = 10

½(2x = 10)½

2x = 10
2 2
x=5

2. Solve for the total number of apples.

x+2=y
5+2=7

3. Solve for the original price of the apple.

56 / 7 = 8
