INTRODUCTION

The Matric of the Year Awards was launched in 1993 and has become one of the most sought-after awards
offered to matric learners of the Eastern and Southern Cape.

Each Year, the school head or school representatives are invited to take the opportunity to nominate their
leading Grade 12 learners who could benefit enormously from this prestigious competition.

The judges are tasked to evaluate and select twenty finalists from top achievers across the Eastern and
Southern Cape. Of the twenty finalists, four will be selected to take up special Category Awards in: Academic,
Sport, Culture and Community Work. A special Excellence Award will be awarded to a deserving matric learner
who excels despite their previously disadvantaged background. The 6th prize is allocated to the overall winner,
taking up the title: The Herald Matric of the Year.

PRIZE MONEY

A cash prize with a total value of R50 000.00 will be shared between The Herald Matric of the Year Award winner
and the Excellence Award winner. This cash prize component will be allocated to assisting/subsidising the
winner’s tertiary tuition fees. All payment procedures will be managed between The Herald and the selected
tertiary institution’s finance department.

FINALIST ANNOUNCEMENTS

All twenty finalists will be acknowledged and profiled in The Herald. Their audio-visual presentation will be
showcased at a prestigious Awards Evening where finalists’ parents, school heads and sponsors gather to
celebrate each matric learners’ achievements and successes.

The Herald Matric of the Year Awards is highly regarded by matric learners throughout the province as a means
of giving recognition to those who have worked so hard in many fields.

This worthwhile project involves young achievers and decision-makers of the future and The Herald is committed
to continuing this project for the benefit of all matric learners in the Eastern and Southern Cape.

In addition to the cash prize component, finalists and the Matric of the Year winner will receive fantastic prizes
valued at over R150 000.00

Entries must be submitted by midday on Monday, 27 August 2018.

Entries can be posted or delivered to Matric of the Year Awards, Newspaper House, 19 Baakens Street, Central,
PE for the attention of Berna Ulay Walters. Alternatively, entries can also be dropped off at the following Spec-
Savers stores in:

 Port Elizabeth: Uitenhage; Walmer Park; Cleary Park; Korsten and Sunridge Park
 East London: Vincent Park and Beacon Bay
