TITLE OF THESIS: ONE CENTRAL MARKET – TRANSPORT SQUARE: A Cross Culture-Sensitive

Public Market with Transport Terminal in the Municipality of Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur”

THESIS STATEMENT:

On March 20, 2018, a fire completely destroyed a public market in the Municipality of Bayog and
left million pesos worth of damages. The proposed cross culture-sensitive public market with transport
terminal in the Municipality of Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur aims to develop a new centralized socio-
culture-sensitive economic district. Through architecture, the project proposal shall serve as a solution to
the problems on sanitary, traffic and improper zoning of goods and products and rebuilding a new image
of a culture-centered civic market place. The study intents to meet and accommodate the growing
population of the municipality and to help enrich the current status of the local industry by providing place
for exchange. Lastly, the researchers envision improving the transportation condition within the locality.

PROGRAM:

Food has a significant impact on our built environment since the beginning of human life. The
need to redevelop the market gave the researchers the drive to study a culturally-sensitive Public Market
wherein different religious sector and their cultural differences must be considered. In relation to this, the
researchers’ aim is to properly zone stalls fit for every cluster. Proper planning of wet and dry goods will
also be measured. Moreover, the lack of management of parking facilities causes traffic, and
environmental issues. This will also be considered by the researchers.

Good architectural approach fosters functionality and success of a market and its transportation.
In conclusion, the proposed public market and transport terminal will reflect the diverse religion, traditions
and beliefs which will have a positive effect on local economy, providing equality and evade discrimination
towards various religions, also offers healthy food alternatives, employment opportunities and a sense of
community pride.

SITE:

The location of the proposed project will rise at the same location for it is the best area fitted for a
public market. It is located along Samico road, Poblacion, Bayog Zamboanga del Sur. Locals are already
used to the place because Barangay Poblacion is the central business district area of the Municipality.

TECHNOLOGY:

The population of the Municipality of Bayog is composed of different aspects of religion. The
notion of unity and harmony must take place. Unity is an umbrella principle for visual design, meaning all
aspects of "The Language of Design" contribute to the visual unity of an image. Consistency among parts
that contribute to the whole is a hallmark of a unified design. The idea of Unity in Architecture is to create
elements that support each other and all work together toward a common goal.
CONTEXT:

Geographical

The Municipality of Bayog is situated on the western part of the Province of Zamboanga del Sur.
It is approximately eighty-two kilometers (82 kms.) from the City of Pagadian, the Provincial Capital and
the Regional Center of Region IX, and approximately 222.5 kilometers from Zamboanga City. Bayog is
bounded on the north by the Municipality of Sindangan, Province of Zamboanga del Norte, on the south
by the Municipality of Buug, on the east by the Municipalities of Kumalarang and Lakewood, and on the
west by the Municipalities of Diplahan and Kabasalan, Zamboang Sibugay. The Municipality has a total
land area of 37,473 hectares distributed among 28 barangays.

History & Culture

In 1953, large numbers of immigrants started settling permanently in this area which was then
sparsely populated by the native Subanen, an indigenous tribe in Zamboanga Peninsula living on
mountainous areas. This place was known to the natives due to the abundance of the “Bayog”
(pterospermum diversifolium) trees. Opportunities in agriculture, business and employment attracted
more settlers into the area, from then, locals from Iloilo, Ilocos and even Muslims migrated in the
municipality and started living in Bayog.

35% Catholic, 25% Seventh Day Adventist, 20% Protestant, 10% Iglesia Ni Cristo, 1% Islam, 9%
Other Lumad religious sectors.

40% Subanen, 20% Cebuano, 15% Ilonggo, 15% Ilocano, 5% Boholano, 2% Waray, 2% Muslim,
1% Other Tribes

Influences

1. Baguio City Public Market (Rajah Soliman St., Bagiuo)

One of the country’s premium destinations, Baguio also has the Philippines’ cleanest public
market, which has become one of the city’s attractions as well. As many people
know, Baguio supplies freshly picked fruits and vegetables to the lowland areas. But coming from
the supplier itself, prices are incredibly low, not to mention there are several stalls to choose from.
Plus, this farmer’s market will not bore you with just fruits and vegetables for it is also an area
where you can buy various souvenirs, handicrafts, flowers, Baguio delicacies and more.
