Pied Piper of Hamelin

Good morning to honourable judges, teachers and my fellow friends. Today, let me

tell you a story entitled “The Pied Piper of Hamelin”.

Hamelin was a small town in Germany. The town was full of rats.

They were everywhere in houses, inns, shops, schools and in streets.

At first, they thought that cats would drive the rats away.

However, the rats were too many. It was really very difficult to

find a lot of cats. They were in a real trouble. Someone needs to do

something.

One day, a stranger came to the town of Hamelin. He carried a flute with him.

He went to see the mayor and said,

"I’m a pied piper. I heard that Hamelin has a big problem with rats. I will

help you to get rid of all the rats in one day, but what would you give as

my reward?"

The mayor was thinking. It was difficult to get rid of the rats, and to do

it in a day? It was impossible!

"I promise you 10 000 gold coins from us if you can do as you say,"

said the mayor proudly.

He was sure the man could not do it. The pied piper nodded

his head and left. Then he walked out in the street, take

out his flute and started playing it. A weird music floated

in the air. People of Hamelin could hear the beautiful music

from every corner of Hamelin.

Suddenly, there was a 'whirring' noise. Thousands of rats came out from everywhere.
The rats were enchanted and followed the music that came from the flute. The pied

piper walked towards the sea, and all the rats of Hamelin followed behind him. It was

such a view!

He continuously playing the flute and walked right into

the sea. The rats followed him and all of them were

drowned. The pied piper got rid of all the rats. He kept

his promise.

The mayor and the town's people were happy. But the mayor had changed his mind.

When the pied piper went to him for his reward, he said,

"It is a wonderful job you have done but 10 000 gold coins is too

much for a one day's work. I will only pay you 100 hundred gold coins."

The Pied Piper was angry. He left the mayor.

In the street he took out his flute and started playing. The

weird music came out again. Suddenly, all the children of

Hamelin came out and followed him.

The Pied Piper played the flute and walked out of the town.

They walked, and walked, and walked and disappeared into the

mountains.

The parents of the children cried, "Where did our children go? We want our

children back!"

They went to see the mayor and complained about it. The mayor was helpless. He

knew that he did not keep his promise and was dishonest with the pied piper. But it was

too late. The pied piper had never returned.

Dear friends,

This is a story for everyone.

We should keep our promise that we have made. Failing to do so is an act of dishonesty.
That’s all from me, thank you.
