Pop Art and the Commercial Society
Assessment Task II

Due date: Monday 16th July 2018 (in class)


Weighting: 30%
Length and/or Format: Written essay
Purpose: How does Pop Art imitate the commercialism of a booming society.

Learning Outcomes Assessed:


5.7: Applies their understanding of aspects of practice to critical and historical interpretations of art
5.8: Uses their understanding of the function of and relationships between artist – artwork – world –
audience in critical and historical interpretations of art
5.9: Demonstrates how the frames provide different interpretations of art
5.10: demonstrates how art criticism and art history construct meanings

Assessment Criteria:
Students have been allocated ONE class period to submit a written essay for the unit Pop Art
and Commercial Society. Using their own knowledge with reference to three or more
appropriate artworks. The set question will derive from one of the following:

 To what extend did the commercial society impact artists’ practice throughout the
1970s?
 As a result of the catastrophic events associated with WW2, art took a dramatic turn.
Discuss in your response the affects that such events had on the artistic community
and ultimately the world.
 Analyse and discuss the following statement in your response (with reference to Pop
Art): Art imitating life imitating art.

Requirements:
1. Students are to write in blue OR black pen only
2. No extra paper will be provided. Please write in only the lined space available.
3. Attempt to utilise the full hour for this assessment task
