Oil (Air in Oil) Troubleshooting


SMCS - 3030

Symptoms
Before you complete any procedure, read Troubleshooting, "Troubleshooting Procedures".

• "Air in Oil"

Air in Oil
This test should be performed if the power train oil system has foaming of the oil. The oil could also
be discolored. A small amount of air in the power train oil is normal.

1. Check the inlet side of the pump.

a. Check the lines and the fittings on the inlet side of the power train oil pump for leaks.
Make the necessary repairs and/or replacements.

Expected Results

◾ The original complaint is resolved.

Results

◾ OKAY: Stop.

◾ NOT OKAY: Repair all leaks that are found. Check the operation of machine for
the original complaint. If conditions are not resolved, proceed to Step 2.

Personal injury can result from hot oil spray and raised attachments.

Make sure all attachments have been lowered, oil is cool and the
pressure has been released from the hydraulic system before removing
any components or lines.

Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

2. Check the magnetic screen and the torque converter scavenge screen for blockages.

a. Drain the power train oil from the power train system.

b. Remove the bottom guard in order to gain access to the magnetic screen and the torque
converter scavenge screen.

c. Remove the cover and the main screen. The cover and the main screen are located in
front of the bevel gear case.

d. Remove the screens from the housing.

e. Check the screens for blockages.

Expected Results

◾ The original complaint is resolved.

Results

◾ OKAY: Proceed to Step 3.

◾ NOT OKAY: Determine the source of the blockages. Repair the component. Wash
the screens in a nonflammable solvent. If conditions are not resolved, proceed to
Step 3.

3. Reassemble removed parts.

a. Inspect the seal. If the seal is damaged, replace the seal.

b. Install the screens, the cover, and the bottom guard.

c. Fill the transmission system with oil.

d. Start the engine.

e. Maintain the oil between the "ADD" mark and the "FULL" mark on the dipstick.

f. Stop the engine.

Expected Results

◾ The air has been removed from the oil system.

Results

◾ OKAY: Stop.

◾ NOT OKAY: The cause of the problem is uncertain. Call technical support with
the information that has been gathered.
