COURSE NO. EEE 4227 COURSE TITLE: POWER ELECTRONICS

Course objectives:
1. To make students acquainted with the utilization aspects of power engineering, particularly the techniques
of solid-state power conversions and their applications.
2. To provide students a thorough understanding of the behavior of semiconductor devices operated as power
switches and make them able to analyze operation, performance and applications of various converters.
2. To explore industry requirements for power electronic engineers.

Assessment Policy:

Class tests and 20 % (3 class tests will be taken)


assignments No class test will be repeated if any student fails to attend. One or two class tests will be
taken without any prior notice.
One assignment will be given.
Class performance 10 %
Grading will be based on active participation in course related discussions in class rooms,
attendance, assignments and class tests.
Final examination 70 %

Tentative Schedule:

Week 1 to 4 Introduction, Power semiconductor switches and Class Test 01
triggering devices: BJT, MOSFET, SCR, IGBT,
GTO, TRIAC, UJT and DIAC.
Week 5 to 6 AC to DC converters/ Rectifiers: Single phase and Class Test 02
Three Phase half wave, full wave uncontrolled and
controlled Rectification
Week 7 to 8 DC to DC converter/ Regulated power supplies:
Linear series and shunt, switching Buck, boost,
buck-boost, ĈUK regulators.
Multi-quadrant Chopper: Class A, B, C, D, E and
DC motor control.
Week 9 to 10 DC to AC converter/ Inverter: Basic inverter, Class Test 03
Single half bridge, full bridge inverter,
Week 11 Resonant pulse inverters, full bridge resonant
inverter, Push-pull inverter, SPWM, Three phase
voltage source Inverter
Week 12 AC to AC converter/ AC voltage controller:
Single phase Half wave AC regulator, Full AC
regulator, and Three phase controlled AC
regulator; Single phase Cycloconverter.
Week 13 Introduction to motor drives, DC motor drives, Assignment
Induction motor drives, Synchronous motor
drives.
Week 14 Stepper motor: Introduction, basic classifications,
operation principle, Driving methods, etc.
