Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I would incorporate Online Learning Projects, Collaboration Sites, and Publishing Opportunities within my
classroom as a way for students to communicate and work with students who may be in or outside of the
classroom. I believe these tools are a great way for students to collaborate and gain a substantial amount of
knowledge from other students who may be from different counties, states, or even countries. By allowing
students to collaborate with students outside of the classroom, they are engaging in higher LoTi levels and
gaining knowledge from others that could benefit their learning extremely.
I would also incorporate these tools by creating a classroom blog where parents, students, and caregivers
can communicate with one another and stay in touch with what is happening in the classroom. Within this
blog, I plan to do flipped classroom activities that will allow students to collaborate with one another as they
are completing the task before class. I also plan to incorporate these sites within my classroom to allow
students to express themselves and share their creativity with their classmates. By giving students a chance to
create a product themselves or without many guidelines gives the teachers a great opportunity to really see
how students are comprehending the content being taught and how they are able to connect with it.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
To implement this proposed learning activity, the technology tools that would need to be accessible in the
classroom would be computers, laptops, or iPads.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: This lesson idea requires students to collaborate with one another and publish their work on
KidPub which is a site that is used for students to communicate with one another about writing
samples. This site is open to students all around the world and gives them the opportunity to generate
ideas and learn from others knowledge.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Within this lesson idea, the students will be creating

their own narrative (real or imaginary). This gives students a wide range of options and allows them to
create a writing piece that reflects their imagination and understanding of what a “narrative” piece of
writing consist of.

c. Higher-order thinking: In this lesson idea, the students are engaging in higher-order thinking as they
are creating products on their own that express their creativity and understanding of the concept.
When the students are publishing their writing samples on KidPub and collaborating with others to
provide positive feedback and edits, the students are engaged in a level of thinking that allows them to
gain a substantial amount of knowledge from other peers. The students are also engaged in higher-
order thinking as they are evaluating others writing samples and displaying knowledge of what a
narrative piece of writing consist of.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Within this
lesson idea, the students will be publishing their work on KidPub which is a site designed specifically
for writing samples from students. The students have the opportunity to comment on each other’s
work and provide positive feedback. The site also opens up discussions about particular writings and
has contest for writing samples.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

To extend and support the learning experiences for all students, I will provide large text key boards for
students to use as they are writing their narratives. This will give all students a chance to practice with key
boards to proficient when using them. I will also provide students with verbal and written instructions on how
to publish their writing samples on KidPub. This will give students who are auditory and visual learners the
support they need as they complete their sample and begin to publish.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:
To implement this lesson experience and still comply with district Internet Safety and Student privacy policies,
I would first educate the students about the importance of internet safety by showing them a model of how
to successfully publish a writing sample using a pseudonym that hides their identities. I would then contact all
parents and caregivers letting them be aware of what my plan is for this publication site and how it will
positive effect their students learning growth. I would also make sure I have permission from administration
to use this site for educational purposes and would follow all precautions needed to ensure student safety
and privacy.
Reflective Practice:
After designing the lesson idea, I believe the activities I created will have a positive impact on students
learning and confidence. By allowing students to publish their own writing samples and providing them with a
variety of positive feedback and edits gives students a feeling of confidence in their writing abilities. Since the
students are publishing on a site that reaches thousands of students across the world, the students are also
going to gain valuable insight and new ideas about writing narratives. To further extend this lesson, I would
have students have students search the KidPub site and find narratives that they can compare with the one
they wrote. While comparing I would have students write down any components they see in the writing that
might not be in their own. This is a good way to make edits and give students a chance to notice revisions

need to be made themselves. Other technology tools that could further enhance this project could be sites
such as Nearpod or Paddlet that could be used to create a graphic organizer to manage the student’s ideas
and important factors they want to incorporate within their narrative writing piece.
