year.

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: In this lesson, students will be observing different shapes of the moon throughout the month.
Students will take pictures using a camera or cellular device to take a picture of the moon at different phases.
These phases include New moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full moon, Waning
Gibbous, Third Quarter, and finally Waxing Crescent. Students will compile these pictures at the end of the
month.
The students will organize their pictures in the order of the moon phases and make a collage. The students
will share their work with the class, classes in the grade level, and will then share their original work on the
CNN iReport website. The students will add a caption as well as hashtags to their post. Once they have posted
their work, it will be available for others to view it.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? A
computer with internet and a picture collage software.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students will be collaborating in the classroom by showing their work to others in the class.
They will be sharing near-peers by displaying their work to others in the grade level and beyond the
classroom by providing their work on the CNN iReport website.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): This is student centered based on the pictures that they
will take a night of the moon and compiling these pictures into a collage.

c. Higher-order thinking: Higher-order thinking is addressed by the students predicting what the moon
phases will look like on the given nights from the teacher.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: This will be
addressed when the students publish their work to a forum specific to their content. Online users will
learn from the original work because they were interested in the subject.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: This idea came from the CNN iReport page.
Parental permission would be the only internet safety policy that would need to be addressed in this activity.

Reflective Practice:
The activity chosen impacts student learning by giving the students a real life, hands on activity that will allow
them to remember the phases of the moon. They can record through pictures instead of words which will
help ELL students. The students will also display their creativity through the captions that will be presented
with their work.
