What are the benefits of a program
that is backed by years of research
and has been in existence since the
1960’s?
 Students learn how to speak, read and
write in two languages.
 Students increase their critical
thinking abilities.
 Students build their self-esteem.
 Students develop an appreciation for
other cultures.
What is my commitment as a parent?

In order to succeed, students need the full
support and participation of their parents.
Studies show students will make steady
progress over time and will eventually
outperform their peers in other programs.
Parents are expected to:
 Research shows it takes a minimum of 5
 Commit to the six year program to 7 years to fully develop academic
(kindergarten through 5th grade) proficiency in a second language.
 Attend mandatory monthly meetings
 Provide support: read to your child daily
and encourage him/her to read and speak Highly Qualified Teachers
in both languages.

What percentage of the day is spent

in English and Spanish?
 The Farmdale Dual Language
Program is an alternating 50:50 mod-
el: half of the day is in Spanish and
half is in English.
 Language arts, math, science, social
studies, health, art and physical
education are taught in both
languages with no repetition of
content or translation. All instruction
is delivered through a concept-based
IB curriculum.
Students in the Dual Language Program
learn all subjects in both English and
Spanish. Studies show that students in
dual programs outperform students in
other educational programs.
Parents in the Dual Language Program
are required to attend monthly meetings
where they learn and share ideas to help
their children be successful in the
program.
How can I support my child if I don’t speak
both languages?
 It is important that you help your child in
the language you are most comfortable.
