The right or sustain pedal is called the damper pedal. It is called damper for it raises all the dampers
from the strings at the same time so that the played notes are sustained. It’s ironic how the term
designates the meaning.
The jazz pianist/composer Gershwin began his hobby of painting and he got quite good at it. He
became more serious about it as he went along. His last oil portrait was of his good friend, Arnold
Schoenberg, best known of the new method in composition, creating serial composition (12 tone
technique).
