REDEVELOPMENT OF THE TOWN HALL , RANCHI

AIM:

To revive the existing town hall to an imposing multi-purpose cultural hub and
landmark by merging elements of tribal arts, architecture, philosophy and
wisdom.
OBJECTIVES:

 Centre for arts and music, which is in the priority list of the locals and art
lovers of the city.
 Larger building with better facilities.
 Exhibition hall, multiple shops, food court, library, auditorium, etc.
 Redeveloping the town hall premises as an architecturally rich and
culturally relevant public space highlighting the tribal heritage of the
region.
 Reclaiming the diminishing value of the town hall as a public space.
RATIONALE:

 Inaugurated in 1975, the town hall building is now dilapidated with

improper facilities to host large events.
 The structure became weak over the years and its one-storey design
was considered old-fashioned.
 Declared condemned or unfit for use by Ranchi district administration
in 2011.
 The city needs a rich cultural hub showcasing the diversity of the tribal
art and culture.
 There can be no better place than the town hall which people already
recognise as a public space owing to the various fairs held annually
within the premises.
