I am pleased to write this letter in highest recommendation of Ms. Meghan Green. I had the
privilege of supervising Ms. Green in her role as a tutor during Upward Bound’s College Club, an
after school academic program that meets four days per week at Ypsilanti Community High
School and I say with all confidence that she is a worthy candidate for your consideration.
Ms. Green became part of the Upward Bound team during a time of major transitions. Upward
Bound was enduring staffing changes as all but one staff member exited, and the school
districts the grant is funded to serve merged into one district. This resulted in a great deal of
rapid change for our students on multiple levels. It was clear to me that these circumstances
and how they affected our students, particularly our young males, tugged at her heartstrings.
She used that as her momentum to help her build incredible connections with our students and
help them turn what seemed insurmountable into strength of character. She worked to achieve
a balance between discipline and personal connection, and the students benefitted greatly
from the intentionality of her mentoring.
One of the things I always appreciated about working with Ms. Green was how she asked
questions to understand the bigger picture. In a poverty-stricken district like Ypsilanti, teacher
and administrator turnover, funding, transportation, and the home life and academic
preparedness of each of our students are all working against the mission of Upward Bound.
Since her goal was to become a teacher, Ms. Green took every opportunity to understand
scenarios inside and out and brainstorm possible solutions or changes to help alleviate some of
the stressors. And she did so patiently, which I was always very grateful for. She learns quickly,
adapts to changes, and holds herself to the highest of standards. I believe she will be a valued
member of your team.
