Dulux Weathershield Semi Gloss on Painted PVC [Exterior] AUSD2157

Substrate And Substrate Preparation

Substrate Painting of some plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, fluorinated plastics, plasticised PVC (vinyls) is not practicable without
Notes: specialised surface treatments or factory methods. Other plastics such as rigid PVC, polyurethanes, polystyrene, polyesters, acrylics,
phenol formaldehyde plastics can be painted after removal of surface contaminants and preparation with correctly selected systems. It is
therefore important to identify (and specify) plastics with these painting difficulties in mind.

PERSPEX
Perspex is an optically clear thermoplastic resin (polymethylmethacrylate) used as a substitute for glass in certain applications.

POLYCARBONATE
Polymeric material which is tougher and more impact resistant, but more prone to scratching than perspex. The weather side is acrylic
glazed. Note that this product has relatively high expansion in the heat, which may cause paint systems to delaminate.

POLYSTYRENE
A thermoplastic polymer of styrene expanded with a gas to produce a lightweight, rigid white material with excellent thermal insulation
properties. Used for architectural mouldings.

POLYURETHANE
A rigid, strong thermoset resin used (among other things) to encase and strengthen polystyrene mouldings. It is also the resin for two pack
polyurethane paints.

PVC
Polyvinyl chloride is a colourless thermoplastic resin (usually pigmented) with good resistance to acids, alkalis and water.

Preparation ASSESS SUITABILITY
Notes: Inspect to determine the degree of deterioration of existing coatings. Check coating adhesion using the cross-hatch test.
CLEAN SURFACE
Clean to remove all dirt, dust and all other surface contaminants by using a suitable cleaning agent and rinsing / water blasting
clean with water. Treat mould with a suitable mould treatment and rinse clean.
REPAIR SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS
Prepare all areas that have poor adhesion, are cracking, peeling and flaking by sanding, power sanding, scraping, wire brushing or
burning off as appropriate. Feather edges of the surrounding sound paint to completely remove visual ridges and wash / dust off to
remove debris. Any major design faults leading to structural failure must be corrected prior to repainting.
SANDING
Sand the entire cleaned substrate to an even flat gloss level to provide a smooth, even surface and to provide a good key for the
new coating system to adhere to.
PRIME
Prime any bare areas with a suitable primer.

Application
Methods:
Air Spray Airless Spray Brush Roller

Min Max Recommended

Theoretical Spread Rate * 16.3 16.3 16
Wet Film Per Coat (microns) 63 63 63
Dry Film Per Coat (microns) 24 24 25
Recoat Time ** 2 Hours Indefinite

Coating Brush, roller, conventional and airless spray

Application *Some colours may require more than the recommended number of coats to achieve full opacity.
Details: Stir contents thoroughly before and during use with a broad flat stirrer, using an upward lifting action.
Brush/Roller: Soak brush and roller in water before starting and use while still slightly damp.
*Over bare timber, apply 3 coats of Weathershield.
On bare galvanised iron within 1km of the sea, apply one coat of Dulux All Metal Primer followed by 2 topcoats of Weathershield.
On bare steel apply one coat of Dulux All Metal Primer followed by 2 topcoats of Weathershield.
On all other surfaces, including brick, masonry and prepainted surfaces, 2 coats only are required.
For Weathershield Chromamax Pigment bases (True Red, Bold Yellow, Blue, Orange and Extra Bright), to ensure excellent durability it is
essential to apply a first coat of Dulux Professional Acrylic Primer prior to the application of two topcoats of Weathershield. However, if the
surface is previously painted in a pale colour and is in sound condition no primer is required.
Professional Painters refer to Duspec Specification Sheets to qualify for guarantee. Under hot or windy conditions, up to 100ml DULUX Hot
Weather Thinner may be added per litre to assist application. Use a short nap roller. Avoid excessive brushing or rolling back into paint which
has been drying some minutes.
Airless or Conventional Spray: Suitable for application by all standard spray equipment. If necessary thin with up to 100ml/litre of water to aid
atomisation.
