1. INTRODUCTION
This report summarizes the results of the Proficiency Testing (PT) Program organized
by MRB in October 2015, for the analysis on Tensile Tests for Glove. The purpose of the
program is to provide means of objectively assessing the precision of the testing
procedure in terms of its repeatability within the laboratory (S r) and reproducibility in
between the laboratories (SR).
In this program, results obtained were presented in such a way that rouge data or
outliers were either “H” or “k” flagged and treated accordingly. The treated data can be
used to generate precision statement of each of the testing procedures.
3
2. FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM
A total of 22 laboratories known for conducting on Tensile Tests for Glove were
participated in the program.
Participants were requested to perform the test according to their copy of the
‘Instruction to Participants” and to record their results on the accompanying ‘Result
Sheet”, both which were distributed to the participants together with the samples.
Six laboratories, four materials, and two replications are the minimum parameters stated
in ASTM E 691. The more the better is a general rule for the number of laboratories and
materials, while two or at most three replications are normally sufficient.
4
To give laboratories feedback on their performance relative to the consensus
results;
To give laboratories sufficient data to enable them to identify and correct
techniques and calibrations that needed correction;
To maintain international confidence in the results from all the laboratories;
To get an estimate of the precision of test method such as repeatability and
reproducibility measurements.
Generally, the analysis of results can be used to suggest possible causes for deviations
from consensus results. These needed to be analysed by examining the equipment, the
test methods, the operators and the results.
Those laboratories wishing to compare the performance of their results with the
consensus may find convenient to start as follows:
Read the main report;
Examine the summary of results and calculation work sheets of each material
and test;
Examine the h and k values of each test and;
Examine the h and k plot by laboratory of each test
4. PARTICIPATING LABORATORIES
The participating laboratories are as follows:
1. Ansell NP Sdn Bhd.
5
9. Hartalega Sdn Bhd
The list is arranged at random according to test data received. A code number
identifies the laboratory and the number above is not the same as the code
number of the laboratory taking part.
Two different gloves are used in this study, that is, Glove A (Powdered free examination
glove) and Glove B (powdered examination glove). Two gloves and six cut dumbbells
from each material were supplied to participating laboratory. The participated lab then
prepared and cut another three dumbbells from the two gloves supplied.
6
6. Test method
The ASTM D3578-05 test method is used as the main reference. Ageing is carried in
accordance with the requirements specified in ASTM D3578, that is, 166±2 h at 70°C.
The tests are as follows:
7
7. Equipment particulars
Type of equipment
In this program, participants were asked to perform their testing according to the test
methods and dates as shown in the following list.

Each test parameter was carried out in duplicate for both samples A and B on two
different days respectively.
9. DATA ANALYSIS
New computer software is used for performing the calculations and producing the tables
and graphs associated with the standard practice of ASTM E691-99: Standard Practice
for Conducting an Interlaboratory Study to Determine the Precision of a Test Method.
The software called “e-Precision” is a web-based system produced in-house by the
Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) for analyzing data obtained from the Proficiency
Testing (PT) or round robin program. Being green, versatile and user-friendly, the
system is not only able to provide the precision values obtained from the PT program in
terms of repeatability (r) and reproducibility (R); it is also capable of treating outliers
data which is a plus point as other commercially available software fails to offer. The
treated values are used to establish a precision statement which is an essential element
in any national and/or international standards.

The derivation of the equations for calculating critical values of h and k are given
below:

The closer this value to zero, the better is the reproducibility.

The critical value for h depends on the number of laboratories participating and the
critical value for k depends on both number of laboratories and number of replicates.
The above critical values are calculated from Student’s t and the F-ratio.
8. OUTLIER REJECTION
Outliers are test results that deviate so much from the bulk of the data. They are
considered to be irreconcilable with remainder of the data. If outliers are present, outlier
12
rejection techniques are used to eliminate the indicated data values. Reanalysis is
conducted on the adjusted database. This analysis yields the statistical parameters that
are then used to calculate the precision parameters, that is h and k-values. The outlier
is treated and the treated results are attached in the report.
Some results may be flagged either h or k or both. Laboratory flagged with either h or k
or both has exceeded the limit of what the other labs has determined. The labs are
advised to take further steps to check their test methods and/or test equipment.
