SUBTOPIC 3 LECTURE 3

ASST. PROF. KRISTIAN AZUL

Study of motion of bodies in
relation to its CAUSES
A body will accelerate
proportional to, and in the
direction of, the resultant of
forces acting on it

𝐹 = 𝑚𝑎
If v is parallel to F, speed
increases.

4
If v is antiparallel to F, speed
decreases.

5
If v is perpendicular to F,
direction of v changes.
6
STATIC DYNAMIC
FNET = 0 FNET = ma
Imaginary forces supposed to
act upon an accelerated body,
equal in magnitude direction to
the resultant of the real forces
𝑚𝑎
Contains the inertia forces that
will be equated to the FBD

Weight Weight
**On banked roads, friction may change
direction depending on the speed of the car.
If there is no air
resistance, both
(elephant and rock)
will experience the
same acceleration
(due to gravity).
𝐹𝐸 𝐹𝑅
= 𝑀𝑅
𝑀𝐸
Same acceleration
throughout means same
velocity upon hitting
ground
However, upon
hitting the ground,
the elephant will
require a higher
force to stop it.
 *The arrows upon hitting the ground should be the force on
the objects, not acceleration
This will act as friction and
will slow down falling objects.
Air resistance increases as the
relative velocity between the
object and air increases.
Maximum (constant) velocity
attained by a body in free fall
Greater weight means
greater air resistance
needed to achieve
terminal velocity –
therefore, greater
terminal velocity.
[Assuming increase of
air resistance is same
for both]
Sensation felt when no external
objects touch your body and
exerts a force (push/pull) on you
[no contact forces].
When in freefall, you feel
weightless
