1.0 SCOPE:

This standard defines the minimum requirements for design, manufacture,

testing and supply of fire hose required for fire fighting at all KOC facilities.

2.0 GENERAL:

2.1 Its purpose is to ensure maximum safety to the user under the most arduous
conditions and maximum conservation of life and property during fire fighting
by obviating failure of hoses from abrasion and bursting whilst in use.

3.0 TERMINOLOGY:

3.1 In this text the Kuwait Oil Company (K.S.C.) is referred to as -KOC-.

3.2 Coating:

A jacket in which the yarn is impregnated or saturated/coated with the

protective material so the outside of the jacket is relatively smooth.

3.3 ~vered:

Jacket covered and lined with a continuous synthetic rubber or plastic, the
cover usually being thicker than that of a coating.

3.4 Fire. hose:

~-) A woven-jacketed, lined, flexible conduit for conveying water/foam for fire
fighting purposes.

3.5 Layftat hose:

A softwall hose that, when de-pressurized internally, collapses to such an

extent that the inner faces of the bore make contact and the hose takes up a
flat cross section appearance.

4.0 REFERENCE CODES AND STANDARDS :

4.1 Fire hoses shall comply with the latest edition of BS 6391 Type 2, or NFPA
1961, with additions and modifications as in~icated in this standard. Fire
hoses shall be approved either by Factory Mutual System (U.S.A.) or
Underwriter's Laboratories Inc.(U.S.A.) or Department of Trade and Industry
(U.K.)
DOC NO. KOC-M-007 I Page 5 of 8 I REV. 1

4.2 In the event of conflict between this specification and the codes referenced
herein, the most stringent requirement shall apply, unless otherwise specified.

Any exceptions or deviations from this standard, along with their merits 8t
justification, shall be brought~o the attention of KOC's Controlling Department'
Standards Division for their review, consideration and amendment (if required)
of the standard.

4.3 List of applicable codes and standards:

BS 336 Fire hose couplings and ancillary equipment

,,:) BS 5173 Methods of tests for rubber and plastics hoses and
hose assemblies

BS 6391 Non-percolating layflat delivery hoses and hose

assemblies for fire fighting purposes

BS EN 28033 Determination of adhesion between components

NFPA 1961 Fire Hose

The American Factory Mutual System

Underwriter's Laboratories Inc. Standard for Fire Hoses

Department of Trade and Industry

5.0 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDmON :

5.1 The environment of Kuwait is severe, and Fire Hoses will be subjected to sand
and fine particle dust storms, sand laden winds, chemical contaminants and
extreme temperatures (-3°C to + 55°C in shade).

5.2 Humidity can pose a serious problem with long periods of relative humidity level
of 100% being part of normal weather pattern.

8.0 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENT:

6.1 Unless otherwise specified, each length of hose shall be as follows:

~!_i';·:~~i}l,_·~·
65mm (2%") 30m (100 ft) 1500 kPa (217 psig)
DOC NO. KOC-M-007 I Page 6 of 8 I REV. 1

6.2 The hose is to be fitted with 66mm (2%") British male 8r. female instantaneous
couplings to BS 336, Fig 1 (a). The couplings shall be manufactured from
gunmetal and chromium plated•

. 6.3 Fire hoses shall be flexible, suitable for high pressure application, made of
synthetic fiber reinforcement, light weight woven-jacketed, PVC coated and
lined with a smooth, impervious, internally reinforced rubber membrane.

6.4 Fire hoses shall consist of: .

(i) a seamless rubber lining:

The lining shall be of natural or synthetic rubber and of uniform

thickness. The waterway surface shall be free from pitting, irregularities
and other imperfections.

(ii) a synthetic fibre reinforcement:

Layer of synthetic fibre reinforcement shall be properly embedded and

bonded within the rubber. Jacket shall be seamless and shall have the
filling woven around the hose throughout its length and the wraps
interwoven with and substantially covering the filling.

(iii) a thermoplastic cover:

The outer surface of the jacket shall be ensheathed in a homogeneous

coating of PVC to prevent the entry of oils and chemicals into the fibers
of the jacket, to enhance the abrasion resistance of the outer surface,
and to confer an additional measure of heat resistance to the jacket. The
cover shall be red.

6.5 The weight of Fire Hose (excluding couplings) shall be as per Table 2 of BS
6391.

7.0 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

7.1 Tensile strength and ultimate elongation of lining and cover material shall not
be less than as specified below:

7.2 All tests shall be conducted as per BS 6391 by the hose manufacturer or at an
approved testing facility designated by the manufacturer.

7.3 All non-destructive hydrostatic tests shall be conducted on hose equipped with
couplings to be delivered.

7.4 Hydrostatic tests of hose consist of subjecting the specimen to the action of
internal water pressure under specified conditions to determine the bursting
strength of the hose and the effect of lower hydrostatic pressures in producing
changes similar to those occurring in service. In the latter case, the test shall
be used as an inspection proof test with a minimum safe limit. Bursting
strength shall be determined on short specimens cut from the full hose lengths,
but in tests for service effects and for proof inspection, the full lengths are
used as specimens. The specimens shall be tested, as required, in straight,
curved, or kinked positions, depending upon the stresses which are desired to
be evaluated•

8.0 MEASUREMENT OF HOSES:

Methods of tests for dimensional stability shall b~ as per BS 6391 ~

(.'-.)
-'''.J
DOC NO. KOC-M-007 I Page 8 of 8 .I REV. 1

9.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING :

9.1 Manufacturer shall fur~ish test certificates of all tests as specified in as 6391.
Test certificates shall include but not limited to the following:

9.1.1 . Tensile and elongation tests of lining and cover shall be ~s per clause 7. 1 ~

9.1.2 Hydrostatic tests for dimensional stability, kink test, proof test and burst test
with pressure shall be as per clause 7.4 and procedure as per BS 6391.

9.1.3 Flexibility, heat ageing, heat resistance, abrasion resistance, and oil resistance
tests shall be as per as 6391.

,-,) 10.0 STORAGE:

It is recommended that the Fire Hose be stored indoor where the temperature
should not exceed 30°C. If this is adhered to, the Fire Hose can be expected
to last 10 years with no detrimental effect. However, if the temperature of the
storage area reaches SooC for a prolonged period, the fortified PVC outer cover
will become less flexible and may stick to itself, reducing the shelf life to 3
years.

11.0 QUAUTY ASSURANCE :

The manufacturer shall operate a quality system which ensures that the
requirements of this Standard are achieved. The quality system shall be based
on the ISO 9000 series of standards and the manufacturer shall demonstrate
compliance by providing a copy of the accredited certificate or the
manufacturer's quality manual. Verification of the manufacturer's quality
\ system is normally part of the pre-qualification procedure, and is therefore not
J detailed in the core text of this standard.

12.0 MARKING:

Marking shall be as per es 6391. In addition, both ends of each hose length
shall be clearly and. indelibly marked as "PROOF TEST PRESSURE 2250 kPa
(326 psig)".

13.0 DOCUMENTATION:

All correspondences, drawings, instructions, data sheets, or any other written

information shall be in English language. All dimensions, units of measurement,
physical constants, etc. shall be in 51 units, unless otherwise specified.
