Guidelines

For

Major Project

[MCA – 6th Sem]


OBJECTIVE OF MAJOR PROJECT
The primary objective of Major Project through practical experience sound appreciation and
understanding of the theoretical principles learn in five semesters of MCA. Major Project is
oriented towards developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to make an effective starts
as a member of the computer / IT profession.
Some of the many expected advantages to be gained by an MCA graduate follwing six
months of Major Projects.
• Systematic introduction to the ways of industry and developing talent and attitudes, so that
be/ she can enjoy fully, a career in IT industry (as a Software Developer/Trainee/Software
Engineer/database administrator etc.)
• Recognizing his/her responsibilities as a professional of the future.
• Understanding real life situations in industrial organizations and their related environments
and accelerating the learning process of how his/her knowledge could be used in a realistic
way.
• Understanding the formal and informal relationship in an industrial organization so as to
promote favorable human relations and teamwork
• Appreciating that IT is an expanding field and that learning has no limitations.
• Understanding that the problems encountered in the industry have unique solution and
gaining experience to select the optional solution from the many alternative available.
INTRODUCTION
MCA students are required to make and submit a Major Project in 6th semester. This project is
basically for the implementation of the various technologies learned during all the 5 semester in
the real life scenario. The training would import practical exposure to all the students in the
industry. The students will be doing projects relating to the different specialization areas.

2. PROCEDURE
The following will be adopted for the process:
2.1.1. Before the training actually starts, profile of the company / organization must be submitted
for the evaluation purpose.
2.1.2. The maximum no. of students who can join one company for training is two(2) per locations.
2.1.3. The letter of the training will be issued only by the Centre Head or Project incharge.
2.1.4. No student will change organization during the training period. However for the betterment
of students case will be put up by project incharge approved by the Centre Head.
2.1.5. After the student joins the training, a joining report must be submitted within stipulated time.
2.1.6. No project will be accepted unless it is done in consultation with the faculty and signed by
him.

3. RULES:
All the students must follow the following rules & regulations not following the rules & regulations
may result in cancellation of candidate & student will have to request the training, under training in
next semester.
a. All the communication must be in writing. No verbal communication will be accepted.
b. Students should follow the procedure as mentioned in guidelines.
c. All the reports and forms must be submitted in the prescribed forms.
d. Students should add here to the timings for submission of various reports as mentioned
in the guidelines. No excuse will be entered in any case.
e. Students must be in regular touch with his project incharge.

4. TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONS:
Students can opt for various types of institutes / organizations for their major project. But before
the training actually starts, profile of the company organization must be submitted for the
evaluating the company. The various parameters like
Turnover of the company organization
• No. of employees
• Locations of the company/organization
• Will be used for evaluation of a company.
5. FIELD FOR PROJECTS
Following is the list of fields under which projects can be undertaken students are required to
select one or more projects from the category listed below and goes it appeared form their project
incharge.
 Database projects.
 Network projects.
 Web based projects.

Java and VB.Net are the languages the students can choose from.

6. EVALUATION OF PROJECT
The project done during the training will basically be evaluated according to the following criteria.

The description about various criterions are as follow:
6.1 Project Report and Documentation
The marks for Project Report and Documentation will be decided on the basis of following
documents.
6.1.1. Synopsis
6.1.2 Mid Term Report
6.1.3 Final Project Report

All the above mentioned documents/reports must be submitted within allotted time & in the
prescribed format.
6.1.1 Synopsis : A document to brief the project undertaken by a student and the requirements
for the project. The format is given in Annexure-1.
The Synopsis must be submitted by May 4, 2010. The synopsis must be submitted after
discussing the project with the concerned department head of the organization. The synopsis will
be approved by the project incharge and then student can continue with the project.
6.1.2 Mid Term Report : A report show the progress of the project by mid-term. It should show the
work completed till date and the status of the work left. The mid-term report must be submitted by
Jun 22, 2010. The project development up to the designing phase should be covered in the mid-
term report mid term report (Annexure-II up Design Phase)

6.1.3 Final Project Report : The projects report are to be submitted by August 14, 2010. The
format of the Final Report is given in Annexure – II.

These report are to be properly catalog. Students will submit two (2) copies of the final Project
Report. A software copy of executable file of the project (on CD only) should also be submitted
along with project report.

6.2 Presentation and Demonstration


At the end of training period, students are required to present the project details and demonstrate
the working of project done, during the training period in from of the panel. The panel will comprise
of Centre Head, Project incharge and Faculties Students should use LCD for presentation and
demonstration. The presentation/demonstration will start from mid of August and will be completed
within 7 working days. The roll no. wise date sheet will be displayed later on.

Rules for presentation


Students should use LCD for presentation and Demonstration
The presentation should not be paper recoding and duration of the project will be of 15 minutes to
30 minutes for each presentation.
Incase of Group presentation, every student from that group will be separating or a separate
concept of the project.

6.3 Internal Viva


An internal examiner will be evaluating the report & conduct the viva on the projects done.

6.4 External Viva


An external Examiner will be called to evaluated the report & conduct the viva on the project done.

6.5 External Project Evaluation


The external examiner will go through the complete project along with the report file and mark the
student on the basis of his/her technical skills work done, presentation of the report, use of the
project etc.
The project incharge will be maintaining a file for every student:
Student Detail File.

6.5.1 Student Detail File


The project incharge will maintain one student detail file per student. Each of this file will contain
the following:
Profile of the company where student is placed (After the approval)
Joining report of the student
Project synopsis (Annexure – I)
Mid Term Report (Annexure – II upto design phase)
Final Project Report (Annexure – III)

7. Phase of Training Period


1) The following are the dates for submitting the documents:

if any of the dates mentioned above as a holiday, the next working date should be considered.
2) The demonstration/presentation will start from 17th August or any other date specified by the
department and will be completed within 7 working days. The presentations of all the students
under one faculty advisor will be held on the same day. The Roll No. wise Date sheet will be
displayed later. No request for change on the date of the presentation will be entertained.
3) The external Viva will be held on one day for all the students. The final date will be notified later.
