Artifact #8: Classroom Management Tools

This artifact is crucial because I believe that with a well-managed classroom, students are

more likely to be successful and engaged. These tools were designed with the classrooms that I

have worked in and have seen firsthand what has worked and what has not. The first tool is a

classroom jobs chart. This is considered to be a procedural tool as it helps with the classroom

routines and structures. As mentioned in my philosophy of education above, having procedures

set out for a classroom sets the overall tone for the class and allows students to take

responsibility of the way their classroom functions. This tool also helps with classroom

community. The second tool is a gem jar which is used for more behaviour management of the

classroom setting. B.F Skinner created the theory of operant conditioning in which positive and

negative reinforcement are the focus. The purpose of the gem jar is to help students follow

routines and stay on task. Students will earn gems for staying on task, following directions, and

anything positive that contributes to the social and academic aspects of the classroom. If students

do not do these things then no gems will be earned. By creating a classroom with routines and

structure in place, it allows teachers to be more effective and students more apt to learning

(Wong, n.d.).
