Channarayanadurga, a village having a hill fortress is at a

distance of 95 km from Bangalore. It is one of the nava-durgas
('nine-forts') around Bangalore. This 1139m hill was fortified by
Channapa Gauda, a chief of Madhugiri in about the middle 17th
century and was later taken by the Marathas. It was also under
the control of the Mysore Rajas during whose regime the name of
the place was changed to Prassannagiri. In one of the
inscriptions, dated 1766, the hill is called Channarayanadurga.

This place is famous for the cultivation of paddy and

sugarcane. In addition to the temple at the top of the hill,
there are two basandis and ruins of fort.

This is an ideal destination for a day's trek. The 45

precipitous and high. The trek starts from the Papagni
Temple at the foothills of Kalwara village. The fortress of
Kalwarbeta is in full sight throughout the walk uphill. This

steep and fantastic trek through a maze of dense shrub is
highly intriguing. Kalwarbeta is a teaser. Just as you reach
the fort wall contended that you have topped the hill, you
see another ring of fort. No sooner you reach there; you
will find another majestic fort wall waiting to be conquered.
There are six such series of stonewalls protecting an

hill consists of two granite cliffs of 4000 feet tall and 13 kilometers (8 miles) in
circumference, one called Bilibetta or white peak, another Karibetta or black peak.

It was a prominent place during the Hoysala rule. Over a period of time several rulers held
this place. The hill fort on the top of the outcrop was erected in 1543 by Samanta Raya. It
then came to Immadi Kempe Gowda of Bangalore until 1728 when it was captured by the
Raja of Mysore from whom it passed to Haider Ali. During the Anglo-Mysore Wars of the
late 18th century, Savandurg was the most forbidding of all the Tippu's hill forts in the

area and hitherto deemed impregnable. Nevertheless, British troops under Cornwallis
commanded by Lt Col Stuart mounted a successful assault against the fort in December
21, 1791.

ginger plants.

The popular short trek to the imposing mountains of Ballalarayanadurga
fort is about 4 hours from the temple. Camping out in the temple's

PUSHPAGIRI

Trekking- Wilderness Camping

The second-highest peak in Kodagu (Coorg), Pushpagiri (1712 m) is a popular

walk. 300 Kms from Bangalore, also called as Kumaraparvat, is a part of the
Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. Views of the semi evergreen and evergreen
forests are regularly obscured by mist, regardless of the time of the year. The
stream that runs down the valley bubbles with lot of springs. There is abundant
variety of avifauna, insects and medicinal plants. Do explore the rich tradition
and culture of the ever-hospitable natives.

The 8 km walk to the peak of Pushpagiri from Somwarpet is easier than the
west side 14 km trek from Kukkesubramanya. This peak is significantly higher
than the other two nearby peaks - Paruvatgiri (1571 m) and Kolkallu Betta

KUNTIBETTA 100 km from Bangalore, Kuntibetta near Mysore and
very close to Padavpura. Kuntibetta is actually two hills
and the one on the right is also called Bhimanabetta.
Trekking The rocks are oddly enough- also known as the 'French
Rock' as the French who assisted Tipu Sultan in his
fight against the British, who stayed here. An interesting
place to explore history! In the countryside, you get to
sniff at pungent smell of the jaggery and a warm smile,
some polite words and a small request will guarantee
unlimited amounts of the fresh sugarcane juice more
delicious than anything you've ever tasted. From the
hilltop, the lake below shimmers in the sun, the twin
humps of Chamundi hills at Mysore flirt with languorous
clouds while Melkote's peak beckons in the distance.

You can walk the hill on the right where the path here is
rather well defined. But in terms of adventure, it is the
hill on the left that is more interesting. Reaching the top
here would take a lot longer as the way is rather hazy
and unclear. But the strain and effort on this route is
more than compensated by the spectacular views from
the top.

Sultanpet to Nandi durg [hills] trek is a visual treat. 56 Kms from

Bangalore, the trek starts at the foothills of Nandi Hills at Sultanpet. Use
the stone steps that edges gently on the slopes to reach the summer rest
house of Tippu Sultan situated inside the hilltop fortress.

Nandidurg is at an altitude of around 4800 feet amid the Nandi Hills near
Bangalore. Captain Allan described the fort as "a strong spacious fortress,
with the best constructed works of all the hill forts, and one of those by
Tippoo deemed impregnable". It was captured by a detachment
commanded by Major Gowdie on 18 October 1791. Control came at quite
a cost: the casualties during the siege amounting to 110. The British
found a plentiful stock of provisions and military stores here, but ceded
the fort to Tipu after the Treaty of Seringapatam in 1792.

Gopalaswamy Betta also described by tradition as 'Kamaladri' situated over the

summit of one of the chains of peaks in the Western Ghats is a beautiful hill resort in
the Mysore District. The approach to the hill is by a motorable ghat road from the
Hangala village at the foot of it. On the summit of the tall flat hill (about 4,769 feet MSL)
is the Gopalaswamy temple. The garbhagiha has early Hoysala features and the
doorway has decorative carvings. The main deity also called Himavat Gopalaswamy is
described as installed by sage Gautama. It is a beautiful image, about one-and-half
meters tall with an ornate prabhavali with the tree motif. The mukhamantapa of the
temple is renovated with brick and mortar. Nearby the temple towards north is a forest

bungalow.
From this bungalow one can witness the panoramic surroundings for a considerable
distance including Wynad in Kerala State. The hill is mostly shrouded in thick fog and
hence the name 'Himavath Gopalaswamy Betta". The place is frequented by wild
elephants, which sometimes enter the temple premises too. There are no permanent
residents near the temple. The hill had a fortification all around and was called
Bettadakote, but only meagre traces of it now remain.

KODACHADRI  Trekking- Wilderness Camping

9 hours drive from Bangalore to Mangalore and further 4 hrs from Mangalore, Kodachadri is a
trekkers delight. Earlier known as the Kutachadri, is believed to be a piece of the Chandragiri
mountain that fell off when Hanuman was carrying it to save wounded Lakshmana and indeed
Kodachadri abounds in medicinal plants. About 64 different medicinal plants have been
identified as of now. Since medicinal plant kuteja was available in this hill in abundance, it is
also known as Kutejaparvatha in the puranas. There is a small temple complex known as
Mookambika Moola Devi Kshetra. Bound by tradition this place is flocked by devotees from
nearby villages and an annual fair takes place during the Mahashivarathri and Navarathri
festivals.

From here, after an hour of uphill climb one can reach the Sarvaghna peeta, the summit of
Kodachadri. The view of the Western Ghats from here is breathtaking. If the skies are clear,
which is not most of the time, the distant Arabian Sea is also visible. The overlooking green
valley offers a panoramic view of the Sharavathi River flowing like a silver stream down below.
From the peak, a steep descent to the left in the thick bushes leads to a cave cut into the rocky
cliff face. This is Chitramoola where Adi Shankara is said to have sat in penance. A perennial
sweet water spring and the sight of an unconventional cave located in the wilderness, shrouded
with mist, makes every step to Kodachadri worthwhile!
Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, more popularly known as
Muthodi, is a little known wildlife destination, which has BHADRA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
so far escaped attention. Once you are there, the
beauty of the place enthralls you. About 290 Kms from Wildlife trips
Bangalore and northeast of Chickmagalur, the
sanctuary is full of dense moist and dry deciduous
forest. Flying squirrel, chital, barking deer and small
water birds are common near the cottages that are
located on the Somavahini River. The sanctuary is also

a home for wild pigs, gaur, hyenas, sloth bears and
elephants. The bright blue flowers of Strobilanthus
cunthialum are endemic to Bhadra Sanctuary. The
occasional chirping of the birds only disturbs the serene
quietness of the rolling green ghats.

With basic minimum amenities, Muthodi makes an ideal

destination for relaxing in midst of nature. So soak up
