THE SYNOPSIS STORY OF THUMBELINA.

A childless woman wants a little child, and when she goes to a witch , she was
given a barleycorn . The magic barleycorn grew up a beautiful big flower.
When the flower open, the woman saw a graceful tiny child. Thumbelina is
borne of a kernel of barley-corn.

Thumbelina lives with the kind woman who wished for her, with tiny
possessions befitting her size. The women are very excited with the presence
of Thumbelina and strive to provide comfort for this little tiny. Thumbelina is
pretty and she sings beautifully. But one night, an ugly old toad steals into the
home and sees in Thumbelina a bride for her uglier son. The toad son can
only croak, though the mother toad can speak. She kidnapped Thumbelina
from her home.

Thumbelina is held captive on a lily pad in a swamp until some little fishes -
who understand her jinx decide to help Thumbelina to escape . They bite the
green stalk and the lily pad which Thumbelina stood float away. As she
passes the town Thumbelina's beauty was praised by birds in their song and
she's befriended by a little white butterfly as she sails downriver on her lily
pad boat.

Until along comes a cockchafer, who caught sight of Thumbelina´s beauty.

Finally , the cockchafer let her go because the other cockchafer convince him
how ugly Thumbelina is.

Thumbelina lived alone in the forest. When the winter come , Thumbelina was
nearly starving and frozen to death. At last, she find the home of an old field-
mouse and begs for food.

The kind old field-mouse takes Thumbelina in, feeding her and keeping her
warm. As a return ,she had to keep the house clean and tell the field mouse
story. Unfortunately, the field-mouse remembered of her blind old neighbour,
a mole, and thinks Thumbelina will be the perfect wife for him. Thumbelina

finds herself facing again an unwanted marriage, but this time she doesn't
want to disappoint the old field-mouse who has been so good to her.

Meanwhile, under the earth , Thumbelina met a pretty swallow. The swallow
was very weak . Thumbelina nursed the swallow until it heal. When the spring
came the swallow left Thumbelina.

Before Thumbelina get marry with the mole, the swallow returns to save her.
She flies on his back to the swallow nest at the top of the palace. The
swallow place Thumbelina on the broad leaves near the palace. She was very
surprised to see that in each flower dwells a tiny people.

Naturally, there's a charming prince among them who attracted with

Thumbelina´s beauty. The prince asked her to be his wife and Thumbelina
agree. Thumbelina is renamed by the spirit of the flower, Mala. She was also
given a pair of beautiful wings, and likely lives happily ever after.

The theme of Thumbelina´ story

Thumbelina is a fairy tales story about the brave little girl. The story
is about tenacity that should always be in ourselves. Never give
up, no matter what it cost.

Setting
1. At night in Thumbelina´s house where she been took away by
the ugly toad.

2. At night in the garden where the toad lives with her ugly son.

3. The stream where the toad captive Thumbelina.

4. The tree where the cockchafer lives.

5. The wide forest . Thumbelina been here for such a long time
until winter came.

6. The corn field. Thumbelina met field mouse and the blind mole.

7. Under the earth. The blind mole lives here . This is also the
place where Thumbelina met the weak swallow.

8. The old palace with the dazzling white marble . The swallow
nest is at the top of the palace.Near the palace grown the large
white flowers where Thumbelina met the prince.

The character in Thumbelina.

The main character and the heroine of the story is Thumbelina.

She is tiny as a thumb. She so beautiful, delicate and graceful. Thumbelina
loves to sing.

The childless lady that is Thumbelina adoptive mother. She is very kind lady
that took care of Thumbelina.

Fairy- has magical power and very kind. She full fill the lady’s wished by given
her a barleycorn.

Mother toad is a big and ugly toad. She kidnap Thumbelina and want to marry
Thumbelina with her ugly son.

The toad son. An ugly toad that could only cry.

Little fishes. They are very kind . They help Thumbelina to escape from the
ugly toad.

The swallow is Thumbelina friends since they first meet and although they say
goodbye shortly after their first meeting, destiny brings the two friends
together again. The swallow always singing to Thumbelina. After Thumbelina
saves the swallow from death, the swallow help her run away from the
unwanted wedding.

The little white butterfly is so lovely and graceful. It is also kind and strong.
Thumbelina tied one end of her girdle around the butterfly and another one at
the leaf where he stood.

The cockshafer. Admire with Thumbelina´ s beauty .He took Thumbelina
to the big tree . But let her go because all his friends said Thumbelina is an
ugly creature.

The field mouse is so kind to Thumbelina but she is not honest. She force
Thumbelina to marry with her blind neighbour the mole.

The Mole.
He is the ugly blind rich old mole who falls in love with Thumbelina from the
moment he hears her beautiful singing.

The prince. He was an angel of the flower. He is tiny and handsome . He has
delicate wings. He fascinated with Thumbelina beauty. Finally , the price
married to Thumbelina.

Personel response

I like Thumbelina Story because it show the brave attitude of little tiny girl
name Thumbelina. In this story , I met another 11 different character . Most of
the character were animals. Thumbelina when through a long journey
adventure. In her adventure , she was so tough facing all the difficulties.

. This make the story more interesting. This magical fairy tale has been
compile with different setting. I enjoyed reading this adventure story because
it is a fairy tales story.

One of the interesting thing in this story is the moral value. The main
character Thumbelina teach us to be happy on ourself. Always be strong and
never give up. This story also tells that we must always be good to others.

Besides the good character, there were also bad characters for examples the
ugly toad. Even thought the field mouse was very good to Thumbelina but
she has the bad intension towards Thumbelina. She force Thumbelina to
marry the blind mole. This shows that we must not take advantage towards
other for our personal gain.

In my opinion, the uses of language is quite high. I think the text is not so
suitable for Malaysian kids whose are not proficient in English. Tumbelina
character portrays us to have the perseverance to face what ever challengers
that come in our ways.

Although Thumbelina was a victim of circumstances she was so gritty. At last,

Thumbelina met a handsome price and married to him.
