Five men in Serangoon slashing case charged in

court
SINGAPORE — Five men aged between 17 and 28
were charged on Friday (July 27) for their roles in a
slashing incident along Serangoon Road.
Victor Alexander Arumugam, Arjun Retnavelu,
Haresh Shanmuganathan, Dinesh Kumar Ruvy and
Sharvin Suraj were charged with rioting while armed
with deadly weapons. They will be remanded for a
week.
If convicted, they may be jailed up to 10 years and
caned.
They were among seven men arrested by the police
less than 24 hours after the alleged attack, which
took place on Wednesday afternoon. The attack is
believed to have arisen from a personal feud.
Investigations against the two remaining
suspects are still ongoing.
On the day of the incident, the seven men
allegedly attacked a 27-year-old man with a
kitchen knife and a samurai sword, leaving
him with slash wounds on his body, the back
of his head, as well as his arms and legs.
They then fled in a rental car, a silver-
coloured Nissan, leaving behind the knife and
an ATM card at the scene. Their relationship
with the injured victim is not known.
The victim was conscious when he was taken
to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he is
believed to be in a stable condition.
On Thursday morning, the police said they
nabbed the suspects in the vicinity of
Corporation Road and Sin Ming Industrial
Estate.
Later in the day, Retnavelu was taken to
Lower Peirce Reservoir as part of
investigations.
The 24-year-old is believed to have wrapped
the samurai sword in an orange cloth and
thrown it into the reservoir while he was
drunk on Wednesday, some two hours after
the incident.
He is also said to have wrapped a metal baton
in the cloth and dumped it in the reservoir. It
is not known whether the baton was used in
the attack.
Despite a four-hour search for the sword on
Thursday, divers came up empty.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Minister for
Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam said it
was “excellent work” by the police.
“There was a horrific attack, on Serangoon
Road. In broad daylight, in public. Men
attacking with knife, sword,” he wrote.
He reiterated that it was "really good work"
by the police to have found the suspects so
quickly.
“The lesson is: in
Singapore, the police
will find the suspects,
and find them
quickly.”

A former Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)
engineer who cheated the Government in contracts worth over S$1.8
million was sentenced to jail for more than two years on Friday (Jul
27).
Rajkumar Padmanathan, 49, was with the force from 1989 until
2012. Between 2008 and 2012, he held the position of Bay In-Charge
of the Fire Control Flight at Tengah Air Base.
His work required him to raise requests for repair or maintenance
works at the air base, which independent contractors then tendered
for.

CHEATING
Rajkumar left the RSAF in July 2012. More than a year later he
joined One Marina Property Services, where his job was to source for
contractors for works that were requested by the firm on RSAF's
behalf.
From 2013 to 2014, Rajkumar helped Eagle Flight Aviation Services
win 14 jobs worth about S$29,000

Rajkumar had pleaded guilty in May to 19 cheating charges, as well
as eight charges under the Official Secrets Act and one charge of
corruption. Another 223 charges were taken into consideration during
sentencing.
On Friday, his defence lawyer Bernice Leong said that Rajkumar
merely wanted to improve what RSAF was being offered by other
vendors. She argued that the works were completed and were of
satisfactory quality.

KUALA LUMPUR: The resignation of Khazanah Nasional’s managing
director and board members will enable the government to restructure the
sovereign wealth fund, said Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
He said the board members’ resignation is a move to “clear the deck to
allow the government to restructure it" in line with policies of the new
administration.
"It is the Prime Minister’s prerogative to appoint the fund’s new board
members, move existing members to other entities or retain some of them
to allow for continuity," he said in a statement on Friday (Jul 27).
On Thursday, Khazanah Nasional confirmed news reports that all its board
members, including the managing director, had offered to resign.
In a statement, the fund said this was to facilitate a smooth and orderly
transition under the new government.
Dr Mahathir said in his statement that the government is not on a witch-
hunt.
On reports that Khazanah Nasional's key stocks plunged on Bursa
Malaysia following the resignations, losing about RM2 billion (US$492.5
million) in combined market value, Dr Mahathir said the amount is
nothing compared to the burden of a RM1 trillion debt that his
administration inherited from the previous government.
Dr Mahathir also took a swipe at former prime minister Najib Razak over
the latter's remark that Pakatan Harapan policies would bring the country
to "a bygone era".
Prime Minister Mahathir noted that the bygone era was when Malaysia
was known as an "Asian Tiger".
Dr Mahathir asked if Malaysians would prefer to return to the era of
Najib's administration when he helmed the country as prime minister. He
said: "Is he saying that the people should be taken back to the era when the
nation was known as a kleptocracy led by a kleptocrat?"
According to reports, Najib made the remark in parliament on Thursday.
