Names

PVOH;Poly(Ethenol), PVA ;Polyviol;Alvyl;Alcotex

Covol,Gelvatol;Lemol;Mowiol;Rhodoviol etc..

Structure

o PVA is atactic material

o PVA exhibit crystallinity and has the same crystal lattice as
polyethylene
Preparation
• PVA prepared by alcoholysis of PVAc .Because its monomer does not exist
in free state

• Water does not react with PVA it may retard the reaction so certain catalyst
are used(acid/base)
• Ethanol or methanol used for alcoholysis
• Alkaline catalyst gives rapid alcoholysis(caustic soda, sodium methoxide)
• In case of sodium methoxide the catalyst concentation(<1%) will control
degree of alcoholysis(residual acetate content)
• PVA will have lower molecular weight than the PVAc from which it made
Application
➢ Use to made water soluble packages for chemicals
➢ PVA used in suspension polymerization as a protective colloid
➢ PVA also employ in adhesives, binders, paper sizing, paper coating
,textile sizing etc..

➢ As a film used in the water transfer printing

process

PVA wood glue

Water transfer printing water soluble packages

➢ Japanese workers have developed fibers from PVA
➢ PVA gloves
➢ Used in eye drops(such as artificial tear to treat dry eyes)and in
contact lens solution
➢ PVA widely used in fishing(water soluble bag)
