Introduction:
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) is an Indian multinational oil and gas company
earlier headquartered in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. As a Corporation, it's registered office is
now at Deendayal Urja Bhavan, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi 110070 India. It is a Public-Sector
Undertaking (PSU) of the Government of India, under the administrative control of the Ministry
of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It is India's largest oil and gas exploration and production
company. It produces around 70% of India's crude oil (equivalent to around 30% of the country's
total demand) and around 62% of its natural gas.

ONGC History:
ONGC was set up under the visionary leadership of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. Pandit Nehru
reposed faith in Shri Keshav Dev Malviya who laid the foundation of ONGC in the form of Oil and
Gas division, under Geological Survey of India, in 1955. A few months later, it was converted into
an Oil and Natural Gas Directorate. The Directorate was converted into Commission and
christened Oil & Natural Gas Commission on 14th August 1956.
In 1994, Oil and Natural Gas Commission was converted in to a Corporation, and in 1997 it was
recognized as one of the Navratnas by the Government of India. Subsequently, it has been
conferred with Maharatna status in the year 2010.
ONGC has made a significant natural gas discovery in the Gulf of Kutch off the west coast. Kutch
would be India's eighth sedimentary basin. ONGC has planned to bring this basin to production
in 2-3 years.
ONGC Videsh:
ONGC Videsh Limited is the international arm of ONGC. It was rechristened on 15 June 1989. The
primary business of ONGC Videsh is to prospect for oil and gas acreages outside India, including
exploration, development and production of oil and gas.
ONGC Videsh has participation in 41 projects in 20 countries namely Azerbaijan, Bangladesh,
Brazil, Colombia, Iraq, Israel, Iran, Kazakhstan, Libya, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Russia,
South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Vietnam and New Zealand. ONGC
Videsh maintains a balanced portfolio of 15 producing, 4 discovered/under development, 18
exploratory and 4 pipeline projects. The Company currently operates/ jointly operates 21
projects. ONGC Videsh had total oil and gas reserves (2P) of about 711 MMTOE as on April 1,
2018.
ONGC Shareholders:
Government of India currently holds a 68.94% equity stake in ONGC.

• Acclaimed for its Corporate Governance practices, Transparency International has ranked
ONGC 26th among the biggest publicly traded global giants.
