Abstract The concept of ‘Social Welfare’ faces many challenges in the 2" decade of the 21° century. But still, in the contemporary time, its importance is not reduced. Because, in any society, the most vulnerable and disadvantaged groups need special attention from the governments (Centre and State) for their existence and well-being; and India as a country is not different to this cause. In this context, the children of the country (India) come under the most vulnerable category. Especially, early childhood is important for the children psychological, physical and social development. Therefore, to develop the children in the right direction, the Anganwadis started under Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme. The ICDS, as one of the important programme under social sector, evolved during last so many decades (since _ 1975). This social service scheme has become an integral part of a nation's planned development, with various resources have been allocated for this service. Thus, after at every interval, there is a need to evaluate its impact properly, so to see that the ultimate goal of the scheme was achieved or not. In this, context, this paper tries to study the impact of Anganwadis (ICDS) on the social welfare administration in the country, Also, the paper discusses the performance of selected States/Union Territories under ‘Anganwadis (ICDS) scheme, which reflects the status of social welfare administration in their jurisdiction. Key Words: . Social Welfare Administration; Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS); Anganwadi Centers (AWCS); Union Territories (UTS). INTRODUCTION Children of today are the future of tomorrow and their survival, growth, and development is utmost important for any country’s development. In this regard, the one flagship programme of the Government of India, which continued for nearly about 40 years of its service to our society; and done remarkable job is ‘Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme’. Every year, an estimated 26 million of children are born in India. According to the 2011 census (Government of India), the total number of children in the age-group 0-6 years is reported as 158.79 million, which is (13.1%) of total Indian population. The male children (0-6 years) was 82.95 million and female children (0-6 years) was 75.84 million, which accounts for (13.3%) and (12.9%) of population for the former and later respectively, to the total population of the country {Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, 2012}. The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme was one of the world's largest programme for carly child development, launched by the Government of India on Gandhi Jayanti Day i.e. 2" October 1975. Since then, this programme has been doing a commendable job for children development (nutritional and health status of the children in the age group of 0-6 years) in our society {ICDS, 2015}
