ABSTRACT

The study was anchored from the practices of folks that guava leaf decoction was used as wound cleanser
and it was conceptualized that may be guava leaf can be formulated into hemostatic cream. The objective
of the study was to determine the hemostatic activity of the formulated guava leaf cream. The formulation
of cream was made using different excipients composed of waxes, fixed oils, water-soluble compounds,
preservatives and the extract, which is the active ingredient. In Vitro determination was used in the
evaluation of hemostatic activity and that is the time when the blood coagulated. Whole blood was used as
the test media for the in-vitro testing. In addition, to determine also the effect on the protein, which is one
of the major components of blood, a milk precipitation technique was used. Data were processed using
Social Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results revealed that different concentration of guava
leaf extract, (25%, 50%,75% and 100%) has significant difference on the hemostatic activity of
guava leaf cream, cream base and chitosan cream. Thus, chitosan cream (positive control) is more
effective than the creams formulation in terms of hemostatic activity.
