I want to thank all of those who participated in the first Forum on Human Sexuality on Sunday,
July 22. We had about 25 sign up for the event, but more than 40 show up! I knew this would be
fine, however, because Ana Price is always prepared with a lot of food on hand, and there was
plenty to go around (thanks, Ana!). Thanks to all those who came and asked good questions and
offered their own perspectives. The next Forum is scheduled for August 26, Noon to 1:30 pm in
Fellowship Hall, and a sign-up sheet will be out on August 5 for three Sundays for you to sign up
and to indicate if you need childcare. This next one in August will examine the biblical texts which
are often used when we discuss the subject of homosexuality. Because there are different interpretations of
these texts, we will attempt to represent these different interpretations accurately.
Karen and I will be away for two Sundays in a row, August 5 and 12, as we travel to faraway Scotland. I’ll be
exploring my Scottish roots, as the original Todds came from the lowlands of Scotland near the English border.
I’d like to think I’m descended from James Todd, a “Covenanter” who was captured on a Scottish bridge in 1679
fighting against “Popery” (Roman Catholic rule) as well as the imposition of Anglican practices on the fiercely
independent and Presbyterian-minded Scots. Interestingly, the Scotch-Irish Covenanters who emigrated to
America several generations later in the early to mid 1700’s were among the first to support independence from
Great Britain and the abolishment of slavery throughout the world (after James Todd was captured, he was put
aboard a ship to become a slave in the West Indies; when the ship sank, he and the other 250 who were chained
in the hold went down with the ship). There’s your mini history lesson of the day, and when I come back in a
couple of weeks wearing my Todd tartan kilt, just please don’t call it a skirt!
In my absence, you will be blessed to have the Rev. Larry Mark preach and lead Holy Communion on August 5.
Larry is retired, having most recently served Reeders UMC nearby. Scott Kuhnle and the youth will be leading the
services on August 12, and I’ll be back in the pulpit on August 19 beginning a four-part sermon series, Starting
Over. Also while I’m away, there are two area clergy assisting Bethany with pastoral care. Please call the office if
you need any assistance in this area.
The last time we put out a call for volunteer office assistance, Claudia Gindraux (pictured)
responded immediately and has been a huge help on certain days in the front office of
the church. Now we must say goodbye to her in the office, though she will still be here on
Sunday mornings with her family. Thank you, Claudia, for your dedicated Christian
service and for your servant heart. We are now welcoming new volunteers to do clerical
work and to answer the phones from 9 am to 1 pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays. Please see or call our church administrator, Jill Teaford, if you’d like to
volunteer. I’ll see you on Sunday, July 29, and then not for a few weeks.
P.S. Our Financial Secretary, Mike Corey, just informed me that as of July 26, $3485.60 has been received
toward our “Budget Blessing” appeal to increase giving to the general budget by the end of the year. As shared
in a recent letter the congregation received, we are prayerfully looking to raise an additional $16,000 by the end
of the year. $8000 of that was pledged by our church leadership. Thanks to all who have made additional pledges
and contributions; allowing us to continue to do the work and fulfill the mission and vision God has given us!
