Problem Statement

A water reservoir is in the form of a surface of revolution with diameter, d varying with depth, h
below the water surface. The volume of water (V) in the reservoir will be given by

𝐻
𝜋
𝑉 = ∫ [ 𝑑 2 ] 𝑑ℎ
4
0

Using the following data for diameter at various depths, determine the volume of water in the
reservoir for the 40-m depth

depth, h (m): 0 5 10 15 20 26 32 38 40

diameter, d (m): 40 36 34 31 25 19 12 8 5

Solution

Theory:

The problem can be solved using trapezoidal rule, the general form of trapezoidal rule is as
follow:

For n=8,

The step size will be,

b−a 40−0
h= = =5
h 8

The general formula for the trapezoidal rule is:

I= 2 [𝑓(𝑥𝑜 ) + 2 ∑𝑛−1
1 𝑓(𝑥𝑖) + 𝑓(𝑥𝑛 )]

Solution

For this case trapezoidal rule will be in the form of given variables:

V=2 [𝑉(ℎ0) + 2 ∑71 𝑉(ℎ𝑖) + 𝑉(ℎ𝑛)]

Expanding it:
We got:

V=2 [𝑉(0) + 2𝑉(5) + 2𝑉(10) + 2𝑉(15) + 2𝑉(20) + 2𝑉(25) + 2𝑉(30) + 2𝑉(35) + 𝑉(40)]

5 𝜋
V=2 . 4 [402 + 2(36)2 + 2(34)2 + 2(31)2 + 2(25)2 + 2(19)2 + 2(12)2 + 2(8)2 + (5)2 ]

V=2182.327 𝑚3
