I. INTRODUCTION

a. Domain and user group

This Crochet Thesaurus design is intended to be used to index terms and works within
crafting subject of crocheting. It encompasses the objects, tools, and terms an individual
may encounter when crocheting. This thesaurus comprises vocabulary from different
levels of crocheting, from beginner to experienced user. It is part of the larger crafting
category of decorative arts and handicrafts (Wikipedia, 2018).

This thesaurus design is aimed at crafters interested in learning to crochet. It is also useful
for those who have crocheted before but need to brush up on their terminology and skills,
as well as for crafters who want to teach others how to crochet. Many similar terms exist
in the domain of needlework and crochet, some of which are interchangeable, so the
thesaurus aims to reach crafters confused or overwhelmed by the available terminology.
The Crochet Thesaurus gathers terms from The Craft Yarn Council, Wikipedia, Red
Heart, The Getty Online Thesaurus, craft blogs, and crochet books.

b. Thesaurus structure and use

The Crochet Thesaurus is useful to those wishing to create indexes for books or
magazines, or those who wish to define and explain terms for a class, blog, or pattern
making.

The Alphabetical Schedule (Part II) consists of both preferred and non-preferred
(lead-in) terms. The terms are arranged alphabetically with bold preferred terms and
regular (non-bolded) non-preferred terms. All preferred terms have a scope note (SN)
that gives the definition of the term as it pertains to the domain of crochet. The non-
preferred terms offer a USE recommendation, which guides the user to the preferred
term. Use for (UF) references are provided in these instances. Many preferred terms
also contain broader terms (BT) indicating the placement in the hierarchy of terms.
Some terms have a narrower term (NT) reference indicating terms below it in the
hierarchy. Related terms (RT) are offered for many of the words, which offer a
connection to similar terms, but make no association between terms according to the
hierarchy.

The following example of the preferred term Treble crochet stitch contains the
scope notes (SN), the use for reference (UF), the broader term (BT), the narrower
terms (NT), and the related term (RT) in the thesaurus.

The above example offers notations for the preferred term, broader term, narrower
term, and related term. These notations correspond with the terms and their notations
in the classified schedule (III). The classified schedule is organized into four main
facets within the crochet domain; C (Common Pattern Terms), E (Equipment), M
(Methods) and S (Stitches). The methods facet is broken down into two sub-facets:
Methods by action (MA) and Methods by type (MT). Methods by action refer to
crochet techniques such as decreasing and blocking, while Methods by type refers to
“proper name” styles of crochet, such as Tunisian crochet and Filet crochet. The
notations are given to the terms based on their order within their faceted hierarchies.
