The Island’s CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

Name Leah Williams

Age 37

Occupation Attorney for Education Organization, Small business owner

Relevant experience

For close to a year, I have served by appointment on the Board of Alameda Health Care
District Board of Directors. During this time, I have worked with the Hospital staff to
create wellness initiative in the City of Alameda called 3Bs – whereby the Hospital provides
free screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure, and body mass index. The next element
of the health and wellness initiative will be to identify ways to support health and wellness in
our local schools and for youth in our community. In addition, I have brought my
expertise as an attorney and small business owner to my stewardship of the Hospital and
overseeing the investment that our community makes through the parcel tax.

Why are you running for this office?

I am running to serve on the Board of the Alameda Health Care District in order to do the
following:
 Continue to increase the health and wellness of our community through initiatives
sponsored by Alameda Hospital
 Continue to serve as the community’s fiduciary and overseeing its investment in the
Alameda Hospital
 Continue to ensure that members of our community have access to high quality
health care and emergency services – all the more critical in a time of crisis

Why should we vote for you?

Voters should vote for me in order to support the above initiatives in our community.

What do you feel are the roles and responsibilities of the office you’re seeking?

The roles and responsibilities are to be the fiscal and community steward of the Hospital
and the citizen’s investment in the Hospital.

What do you think is the most pressing issue you would face if elected and what would you
do to address it?

The most pressing issue faced by the Hospital is the struggling economy and the impact on
small hospitals and members of the community.
The hospital is facing two major challenges: The loss of its surgical contract with Kaiser
Permanente and earthquake fixes that will cost $10 million. If elected, how would you seek
to handle those challenges?

• Kaiser contract ending – The Kaiser contract ending is an event that impacted
many hospitals in the Bay Area, including Alameda Hospital. In our community,
Alameda Hospital seeks to innovate new ways for the Hospital to serve the
community such as the Wound Care Center and partnerships with local businesses
to support wellness in the community.
• Seismic preparation – As a business leader and attorney, I look for innovative
solutions to finance and increase the fiscal health of the hospital, as well as work
with regulators to find ways to incrementally implement the seismic requirements.

What services do you think the hospital should provide to residents?

 Continue to increase the health and wellness of our community through initiatives
sponsored by Alameda Hospital
 Continue to serve as the community’s fiduciary and overseeing its investment in the
Alameda Hospital
 Continue to ensure that members of our community have access to high quality
health care and emergency services – all the more critical in a time of crisis and
natural disaster as a majority of Alameda’s citizens live/visit the island.
