2016 SEASON
The 2016 season was an interesting one for the Redbirds. The team saw two different droughts
come to an end – one great, the other they could’ve done without. They went 29-11 which was
good enough to clinch the North Division Title and the Regular Season Title over the Bethesda
Big Train by one game. They would make it to the League Championship Series for the eighth
consecutive season, but fall short of a fifth straight title as they fell to Bethesda in three games.
It was another solid group of players that came from a number of different schools from all
over the country. Year after year John Carey and Dave Sutor out-recruit the competition by
collecting guys from Division 1 power houses such as Ole Miss, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Maryland, Virginia and many more. Last year was no different.
The rotation was led by Hunter Parsons (Maryland), the 2016 Ripken League pitcher of the year
and the bullpen was one of the best in the league led by two righties, Mike Rescigno (Maryland)
and Joey Sullivan (Virginia Tech). The lineup was solid and featured six players that hit above
.300. Two guys that stood out were Kyle Datres (North Carolina) who led the team in hitting at
.378 and two-time All-Star Marty Costes (Maryland) who hit seven home runs.
This squad would feature 10 All-Stars, more than any other team in the league and just one shy
of their 2015 total. Marty Costes would even compete in the All-Star game and home run derby
for the second straight year. Under Redbirds head coach Larry Sheets, Baltimore has 21 All-
Stars in his two seasons – eight pitchers and 13 position players.
With a week left in the regular season, the Birds would secure a playoff spot and in the final
game of the season on July 22nd, they would secure home field advantage for the postseason
with a victory at home over the Herndon Braves. Baltimore would ultimately play Herndon in
the second round of the postseason.
In what would be the hottest night of the season which featured a 102 degree first pitch,
Baltimore would beat Herndon 10-4. The very next night in Virginia, they would squeak away
with a victory in extras 7-4 and sweep the best-of-three series. Up next would be Bethesda for
the eighth straight year in the Championship Series.
After game one was postponed and moved to Bethesda the following day, the Big Train would
take game one. Back to Baltimore they came and there was more rain. Game two was
suspended and would be completed the following day. Baltimore would win 7-6 behind 2.2
scoreless innings from former Big Train pitcher, Mike Rescigno. In game three later that day,
Bethesda would claim their first league title winning 4-3.
Last year’s ball club saw two Top-100 Perfect Game prospects and the Ripken League pitcher of
the year in Hunter Parsons. Two of the members of last year’s squad will return this season –
Ryan Sloniger (Penn State) and Culver Hughes (Virginia Tech).
