Activity This learning activity will help students understand
and explain the structures of the American
constitutional government. The teacher will start the
lesson with a video from “Schoolhouse Rock!” about
the bill-to-lawmaking process. Following the video,
the class will have a small discussion to ensure
understanding. For the activity, the students will
create their own slideshow/presentation that
depicts the lawmaking process within the state
government. The students will be creating a
slideshow/presentation by using an Apple
application called Keynote. Keynote forms an easier
and more unique way to create presentations. The
students will be given the opportunity to create
their own slides and customize background images.
Pedagogy
Keynote allows students to use images, drawings,
text-wrapped images, charts, and shapes. The
students are to use whatever it takes to fit the

b) Explaining the principle of separation of powers
and the operation of checks and balances.
This learning activity will encourage students to step
out their “comfort zones”, and work together in
groups. The students will understand the works of
the American constitutional government at a
national level. The students will be working as a
group (of two or three) to explain the operation of
checks and balances; as well as the separation of
powers (branches of government). To complete this
assignment, the teacher will start the lesson by
asking a couple of questions about the branches of
government/ checks and balances. To help, the
teacher will provide a BrainPOP video for better
understanding. BrainPOP is an excellent website that
provides videos, games and quizzes to better the
students learning process. The BrainPOP video goes
over the three branches of government, and the
“checks and balances” system. Once the teacher
finishes the class discussion/video, the class will

assignment properly. For example, the students
could draw the images they wish to use or use one
from Google. The app also has a transition feature
that adds more of a dramatic change between slides
(only if the students wants to). Preferably, the
students will have an illustration (whether an image
or a drawing using the “Apple Pencil”) with each of
the slides. The slides will also contain information
regarding the steps to become a law, the length of
the process, what happens when the president
vetoes a law, what the process means to “us” as a
state, etc. The students will add as much
information and detail as they can. The rest of the
activity is up to the students, but the teacher will
constantly state what is expected. The teacher will
only allow the students to work individually on this
activity. The teacher is to make sure that each
student is doing their own work. The students will
be allowed to use their class notes to guide them
through the assignment. The teacher will also
provide an example presentation that could help the
students get started. The app will be accessed on
the school iPad or iPhone given.

teacher. For the activity, the students will
collaborate to create a flow chart that explains what
the three branches of government are, what they do
within the government (what is there job?), their
role at a national level, and what their job is when it
comes to checks and balances. The students are to
use their class notes and each other as guides to
complete the assignment. Even though the students
are working as a group, they will be using their OWN
mobile device provided by the teacher. To create
the flowchart, the students will be using Google
Docs and Google Drive to share their work. Google
Docs is a collaboration tool that can be used on any
device. In this case, the class will be using it within a
mobile device app. The tool allows multiple students
to edit, view, and change any document at the same
time. Google Docs allows the students to work on
their assignment at school and at home. The tool
requires a login/ password that could be created by
email or provided by the school. The students can
create spreadsheets, flowcharts, text documents,
and more. However, for this assignment, the
students will be using the flowchart. The students
are challenged to be as creative as they can. The
flowchart tool has a plethora of shapes, text sizes,
arrows, and layouts to choose from. The teacher will
show the class an example of a finished flowchart,
and will go over what is expected for the
assignment. Once the students complete the
assignment, they can share their work through
Google Drive, so that the entire class can see each
other’s work (this will only happen after the teacher

checks all of groups work). This will leave room for

more class discussions. The app will be accessed on
the school iPad or iPhone given.
