INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

This section presents the reason for the study. It gives the general background of the

study. Usually, the word “Rationale” is enough, but since the title is often overlooked, “of the

Study” is added to stress the section contains the reason for the conduct of the study.

On page numbers

As regards page number, the beginning of each chapter must not contain the page

number. The page numbers must be in Arabic.

Page number of other sections. The page numbers of prefatory materials are in small

Roman numerals. (i, ii, iii, iv)

On using the font

The fonts are always clear type fonts (12 pts). Commonly used fonts are Times New

Roman, Verdana, Calibri, Garamond, etc. Do not use courier new (like this).

Theoretical Background

This section discusses the various literature and unpublished studies that present a view

on the current problem. The researcher evaluates the views regarding the different aspects of

his problem.
THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

In this section, the researcher introduces the specific problem to be addressed by the

researcher. I contain the specific questions which will be addressed by the research.

Significance of the Study

I contain the importance of the study, its impact on a certain field, its contributions—

practical or theoretical. For example, one contribution of my research is the advance of a

theory, linking realism and idealism.

Scope and Limitations

As the section suggests, I contain the elements to cover or set the parameters in the

conduct of the research. My elements of course depend on the variables of my research and

the method that I will use. For example, in my textual analysis, I only cover the materials

written in French because of the lack of English translated materials. I am focused on the 19 th

century version of Socratic epistemology.

RESEARCH METHOD

As a part of this research, I show my importance by indicating how I gather the data and

how the data are treated or interpreted. Philosophical research has various methods, often

evinced by school of thought in philosophy. For example, this study can employ the analytic
method, which was predominant in Analytic Philosophy. Treating the data, in this instance,

entails linguistic analysis. For example, if I’m going to analyse religious experience (RE), the

variables that I need are mystical experience (ME) and subjectivity (S). Hence, I have RE= (ME)

(S).

DEFINITION OF TERMS

I contain the terms which, although they may contain different meanings, they will only

be used according to the definition stated here. For example,

Being in itself is the “Being of the phenomenon and overflows the knowledge which we

have of it. It is the plenitude, and strictly speaking we can cay of it only that it is” (Sartre 1943,

800).

ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY

The organization of the study projects the contents of the chapters, that is, it states the

possible contents of each chapter. The content of this section can be guided by the questions

stated or problems raised in the “Statement of the Problem.” As often practiced, each problem

question corresponds to chapters 2, 3, and 4, while Chapter 5 will contain summary,

conclusions, and recommendations.

BIBLIOGRAPHY (REFERENCES)

I am called bibliography when my researcher uses the footnote/endnote form of

documentation. This entails also that I will be divided into such groups as Books, Periodicals,
Electronic Sources, Unpublished Materials. Books are literary works that focus on one major

theme and non-serial. Periodicals are written materials that appear in a regular series; they

often include journals, magazines, etc. Electronic Sources include materials stored and accessed

electronically. They include online materials, CD materials, and database materials.

I am called References when the researcher uses parenthetical form of documentation.

In this regard, the sources are no longer segregated or classified.

Chapter 2

HIERARCHICAL FORMAT AND STYLE

First Major Section (If Any)

Rationale of the Study

This indented part is now the first sentence of the paragraph.

On page numbers

In case, there will be a subsection, then the style is sentence title (e.g. On page

numbers) and in italics.

Page number of other sections. In case the subsection is further divided, then the

paragraph will have a sentence title in similar font and style as the paragraph (e.g., Page

number of other sections.) Notice that this is indented.

On using the font

Third level subsection.

Theoretical Background

On theory

Suppose there is a subsection for the Theoretical Background. In this instance, its style is

sentence title and italicized.
