Playing is our childrens full time job and a great way
to learn for life, whether it’s social behavior, language,
empathy or risk management. Maria Thörn is a passionate
advocate for the greatness of playing, regardless of our

DR. STUART BROWN, A PIONEER IN PLAY RESEARCH.
MEET THE PLAYERS...
Lots of people played together to make LATTJO a reality.
Illustrators, designers, a design agency and a renowned
American play researcher all played their part.
The Stockholm-based illustrator duo Maja Sten and
Tyra von Zweigbergk were part of the early design
process and invented the world where all things LATTJO
origins:
“It consists of three parallel worlds – the mysterious
underground, the magic garden and a castle – inhabited
by all kinds of fantastic creatures”, says Tyra.
The characters, inspired by insects, roots and
vegetation, pop up in different parts of the collection –
like in the jigsaw puzzle that has pieces in three different

sizes to be a challenge for both young and old.
“I think we did almost 100 versions of the image before
we were completely happy”, says Maja.
Before taking the visual ideas further by starting the
actual product design, the design team from IKEA met up
with American play researcher Dr. Stuart Brown who’s
spent most of his life studying play and the effect it has
on all of us.
“Plenty of play in childhood makes for happy, smart
adults – and keeping it up can make us smarter at any
age”, says Stuart, who among other things is the founder
of the National Institute for Play in the US (and who

A large team of designers from different parts of the
world came together to realize LATTJO.
“We wanted to create a collection that triggers curiosity
and inspires adults and kids to start playing together”,
says Sigga Heimis, designer and part of the LATTJO team.
The products are made of natural materials, with
attention to detail and with a unique graphic identity.
“The LATTJO toys age with grace. They look great on the
shelf, or on the floor, and don’t need to be hidden away
in a cabinet when not played with. That way it’s much
easier to start playing again and again.”

The LATTJO app is designed for playing together even
when you’re not in the same place.
“We wanted to find new ways of playing together and
were curious about how to allow for it from a distance.
The app is designed in a way that connects the digital
world with the physical, a prolonging of the collection
of products, where you create something together
regardless of where you are”, says Nils Larsson, creative
leader for the LATTJO app.
Since developing digital products is new territory, IKEA
teamed up with the Stockholm-based design agency
Acne early on in the process.
“This collaboration is a first step in creating innovative
products that engages families and friends to interact
with each other. It’s a unique opportunity for Acne to
combine our creative talent with IKEA’s incredible know-

THE PLAY REPORT
At IKEA, play is a pretty serious business. So serious,
in fact, that we recently conducted the world’s largest
research study on the subject. Nearly 30,000 people –
more than 16,000 parents, 6,000 children and
7,000 young people from 12 countries around the world
answered questions about playing and day-to-day life.
The large material gave us lots of insights into family life,
insights that we´ve put together in our new Play Report.
So, what did we find out?
As a whole people agree that play is super important
and that home is a great playground. However, the large
majority of parents whish they had an easier time
connecting with their inner child so to be more inspired
on the playfront. THE PLAY
Another obstacle that stands in the way of us all playing REPORT 2015

Considering all this we’ve realized that we’ve got an
