Learning
Objective 4.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic,
and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations in which
c) appropriate instruments are selected and used to measure length, mass,
volume, and temperature in metric units;
d) appropriate instruments are selected and used to measure elapsed time;
Content

e) predictions and inferences are made, and conclusions are drawn based on data
from a variety of sources;

Online
Activity The teacher will upload a prerecorded introduction video about understanding
scientific reasoning and logic. Students can view this video, in the notes section of
the class’s homepage. During the video, the teacher will go over key concepts and
the importance of measurement. The teacher will go on to include the importance
of knowing the density, mass, and volume of an object. There will be several
examples included in the video that will teach students how to read a scale,
graduated cylinder, and beaker. The students will watch the video and will be
asked to participate in a simulation that focuses on measuring the density of an
object on the Gizmos website.

After watching the introduction video, students will be instructed to go to

https://www.explorelearning.com. At the top right corner, students will be told to
click on the Login/Enroll link. Here, students should type in the unique code given
by the teacher to complete the assigned simulation. The code for this simulation is
JD2PZVVVJC. Once the student has typed in the unique code, they should create
an account to keep track on their work. After creating an account, the student
should begin the “Density” simulation.

Students should begin the simulation by setting the type of liquid to water for all
instruments. Students will select each object and drag it to the scale. Once the
object is weighed, students should record the measurement and then drag the
object to the graduated cylinder. Once the object is in the graduated cylinder, the
Pedagogy

student should record its volume and then drag the object to the beaker and
determine if the object will sink or float. Students should do the same procedure
for all objects provided in the simulation. After completing the simulation,
students should keep their recordings in an organized chart, that will be turned in
later.
Once this assignment is complete, students should be able to use scientific
reasoning and knowledge to determine the mass, density, and volume of objects.
Student should also be able to predict if objects will sink or float when put into
water.
