Example 3: A continous 3 span beam carries 43.

2 kN/m permanent actions/load(Gk)

including its self-weight and 36 kN/m variable action(Qk). Draw the possible load
arrangements on the beam. Calculate the maximum moment at span AB and at support B.
Assume that beam is used in a residential building.

Load/actions combinations

Consider STR situation,

Equation 6.10 a,

For equation 6.10a, select ߮ from table A 1.1 from National Annex in

NS EN1990:2002/NA:2008

For residential buildings

߮଴ = 0.7 then, 1.5 x 0.7

Design load = (1.35 x 43.2 kN/m + 1.5x0.7X 36 kN/m) = 96.1 kN/m

Equation 6.10 b,

Design load = (1.2 x 43.2 kN/m + 1.5X 36 kN/m) = 105.8 kN/m

Less favorable combination (critical combination) is 105.8 kN/m, partial factor of safety; ᵞG = 1.2
(for permanent load), ᵞQ =1.5(for variable load).
