Text Abstract
There is evidence that the distribution of disease burden is not equally distributed, as populations
in low- and middle-income countries have a higher prevalence of chronic diseases. In addition,
the distribution of the disease is not equal between groups within the same country Not only is it
common for poor populations to be more exposed to infectious diseases, it is still common for
these populations to be in places with low urban quality. The aim of this study is to describe the
urban spaces in terms of walkability, as well as to explore the distribution of urban factors related
to the practice of physical activities and health outcomes of residents of two low-income
neighborhoods in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais General, Brazil.

Data were collected from 120 individuals (N = 120; Female = 79). For objective data around
participants' houses (500 and 250 meters) we used SPOTLIGHT tool. Data for risk factors and
prevalence of disease were collected through a questionnaire based on VIGITEL, a Brazilian
surveillance system by telephone survey for risk factors and protection for chronic diseases.

In terms of prevalence of diseases and health conditions, the selected neighborhoods present a
high prevalence rate of overweight and obesity (68.66% in one and 71.70% in the other). In
terms of walkability, the neighbourhoods present low walkability, both when considering the
perception data (mainly density, pedestrian infrastructure and aesthetics), and when considering
objective data (mainly accessibility, pedestrian infrastructure, aesthetics and safety in relation to
traffic).

When compared to data on the prevalence of health conditions for Brazilian capitals, the
prevalence found for these areas are considerably higher. Since the two districts are mostly
irregular occupation in inadequate urban areas by low-income population, the need to review
urban regularization practices for areas of informal occupation is highlighted.
