SAY and TELL Decir


WAIT, HOPE, EXPECT Esperar
WIN, EARN, PASS, GAIN Ganar

SAY and TELL

SAY. Use say to translate “decir” except in the following situations.

a. Tell the truth or a lie


b. Tell a story or a joke
c. Tell the times, the news, the facts
d. Before an object pronoun (me, you, him, her, us, them)

TELL. Tell has the meaning of: narrar, contar, describir, decir.

Examples:

They tell me you are doing a fine job.


Why don’t you tell Leslie about work
The director said that you are a very good accountant
The newpaper says there is a big sale today
He is always telling jokes
WAIT, HOPE and EXPECT

WAIT. It has the idea of: to remain inactive


HOPE. It means: to desire something
EXPECT. It is to look forward

Examples:

I am waiting for my check


He always waits for the bus on that corner
She hopes to graduate next year
I hope to get the scholarship
She is expecting a baby in November
We expected an answer very soon

EARN, WIN, PASS, GAIN

EARN. It is to obtain a salary, to profit in business.


WIN. It is to receive a prize in sports, contests, competitions, something
PASS. It means to get grades
GAIN. To get friends, popularity, weight

Examples:
The secretary earns $350 a month
They are very happy because they won a lottery prize
Our favorite foot-ball team has won the game
Everybody must know how to earn his living
He is gaining a lot of popularity
She passed her examinations with very good grades
They passed to fifth grade
You gain friends easily

BORROW AND LEND

BORROW. It is to receive from


LEND. It is to give to

Examples:

He borrowed money from his partner


I need a calculator may I borrow yours?
Don’t lend your typewrite to anybody
The bank lent him the money to build his house
REMEMBER AND REMIND

REMEMBER. It is (recordar) by oneself


REMIND. It is (recordar) by means of somebody or something

Examples:

I can’t remember what her name is


Nobody remembered the full amount
Please remind her to call Mr. Career
That bill reminds me I have to pay the rent

RISE AND RAISE

RISE. It to move from a lower to a higher position


RAISE. It is elevate something, to produce, to increase

Examples:

Guatemala raises cotton and coffee


The cost of living has risen tremendously
The sun rises in the east
Please raise your hand when I call your names.
