References: Learner’s Module in Math 7, DepEd; Next Century Mathematics,

CONCEPT NOTES:
A set is a well-defined group of objects, called elements that share a common
characteristic. Uppercase letters will be used to name sets and lowercase letters will be used
to refer to any element of a set.

TWO WAYS OF WRITING SETS

1. ROSTER FORM – all elements are listed, separated by comma, and enclosed in a pair of
brackets { }.
Example: Colors of the rainbow
R = {red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet}

1. SET-BUILDER FORM – the elements are not listed but they are represented by specifying
a property. Set-builder form always takes the form { x | x has a certain property }.

Example: Write each set listed below in set-builder form.

a. C = { 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, …}
b. D = { +, -, ×, ÷ }
Solutions:
a. C = { x | x is an odd number }
b. D = { x | x is a symbol of fundamental arithmetic operations }

A. List the elements of the following sets:
1. M = {x|x is an odd integer}
2. A = {x|x is a counting number}
3. T = {x|x is the months of the year with less than 31 days}
4. H = {x|x is a counting number between 7 and 10}
