Open Education Resource on

Measurement of Force and Torque
Section 1: OER - An Introduction
About OER
The Open Education Resource is developed as a collection of MOODLE lesson activities
with an aim of incorporating the idea of flipped classroom technique which we have learnt
from IITBombayX: FDP101x and FDP201x courses.Mechanical Measurement is a very
basic and important topic in the field of Mechanical Engineering since it is used in almost
all the subjects that we study in mechanical engineering.

OER is downloadable from: https://rhmsomanathswamy.wordpress.com/fdp-201x/

Note: Email-based self-enrolment has been enabled for this course after reading this
handbook you can enroll for the course named "Measurement of Force and Torque" .

Target Audience: Students from Diploma, Engineering & Master’s (Mechanical

Engineering)

Key Words: Flipped Classroom, Mechanical Measurements, PPT’s & Students.

Learning Objectives:
After using this OER, learner will be able to:

1. Understand the basic concepts of Mechanical Measurements.

2. Understand & Apply the different types of Force Measuring instruments.
3. Understand & Apply the different types of Torque Measuring instruments.

3|Page
OER – Handbook
(RC: 1420, Group ID: 007)
As a teacher, one should explain the following:

1. Fundamental concepts of Mechanical Measurements.

2. Explain the various types of Mechanical Measurements system with the aid of
illustration.
3. Explain the concept of various force & torque measuring instruments.

Section 2: Design Decisions

Nature of Decisions taken:
The design decisions involved in the creation of this OER were of broadly three types:

1. Content Decisions.

2. Pedagogic Decisions.

3. Technology Decisions.

Content Decisions:
Contents of the work are decided by discussing with our team members and decision was
taken to create on Mechanical Measurements of force and torque.

Pedagogic Decisions
In a flipped classroom strategy, there are two sections – Out-of-class segment and In-Class
segment. The out-of-class segment needs student to go through the given material (in
Video, Text etc.) in order to furnish the information out of the classroom to understand
about the concepts that are important.

In terms of concept marking the pedagogic decisions that were taken for the Out-of-class
segment related to:

a. Cognitive Levels of Questions to be asked along with the resources for out of class and
Create Level question for In-class
b. Assessment Strategies – Multiple choice questions for out of class,

Team-Pair-Solo strategy for in-class

Enlist the different measuring instruments associated with the measurement of a given
component.

Think --- 1 minute

Pair --- 3 minutes

Solo – 4 minutes

Identify the common answers from all the students

Technology Decisions:
Technology Decisions are taken while developing Out-of-Class segment:

1. Screencast-O-Matic Recorder has been used for recording the video about OER
activity, as it has a time limit of 15 minutes and provides an option for creating the
videos, which can be played directly from any browser.
2. MOODLE is used for Setting up Out-of-Class activity as it allows Email based self-
enrolment.

3. https://www.youtube.com for uploading the LbD videos

4. MS word document processor has been used for documentation of OER.

5. A freely available PDF Creator has been used for converting work document file
into PDF document.

6. https://wordpress.com to upload and share the created OER with peers.

7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYm3ZeTWU7M use this link for viewing

Best Practices with Lesson Activity:

Here are some of the best practices from our personnel experience on using this Lesson
Activity in classroom:

1. Release of the activity at least 1 week in advance.

2. Communication of minor incentive (marks) for completion of the activity.

3. It would be good if the screencasts and resources were separately available in a

“Resources” folder in the wordpress site (with out of class and in class activity).

Creation of Moodle Cloud Site:

Before the creation, of course, one should have a MoodleCloud site.

In order to create an moodle cloud site:

 Visit the https://moodlecloud.com/, click on SIGN UP(which is on right extreme

top)

Email Based Self Enrolment:

In order to access the course by the peers, Email based self enrolment has to be
enabled for the course, so that peers can access by self registration. The step by step
procedure is as follows:

 Go to Site Administration → Plugins → Enrolments → Enable Self Enrolment → Save

Changes.

 Go to Site Administration → Plugins → Authentication → Enable Email Based Self

Registration. Scroll down, in common settings, Change the Self Registration from
Disabled to Email-Based-Self-Registration → Save Changes.

 Go to Your course (i.e. Measurement of Force and Torque) → Click on Actions (on
Right extreme top corner) → Select “more” → Select “Users” → Select “Enrolment
methods” → Enable “the Self enrolment”.

How to use this OER:

As a Learner:

As a learner one can access this OER by clicking on the link

https://rhms.moodlecloud.com/login/index.php, wherein the Email based self

registration has been enabled for the course and one can register for the course from their
email ID by clicking on “Create New Account”, Register by providing the proper details like
Email ID, Number, etc., then an confirmation email will be sent to your email ID, once the
Email is confirmed then you will be automatically enrolled for the course.

Now, the learner can access all the modules/topics for the said course.

As Course Instructor:

In order to use this OER as a Course Instructor, make sure that you have Admin
rights in your Moodle course (as it is necessary for importing the course), else contact
your

Best Practices with Lesson Activity:

Here are the some of the best practices which we have learned from the Faculty
development programmes from IIT Bombay on using this lesson activity in the classroom.

 This course to be provided to the students one week prior to the class.
 Grades should be assigned for those who complete the activity well in time.
 We have to make sure that, students are benefitted with this at the end of the out-
of-class activity.
 Screencasts, PPTs, Videos, etc., have to create separately in the MoodleCloud under
Resources folder.

Section 4: Evaluating Effectiveness of OER

Effectiveness at the student level:
1. Understand the basic concepts of force related measurements with the support of
simulative examples.

2. Essaying the different types as force and torque measuring instruments.

3. Understand the working principle of various force and torque instruments.

4. Each lesson contains summaries of individual learning objectives that will guide the
learners on the main aspects of the lesson.

5. Each content of the lesson is followed with objective type questions based on the
description of the chapter.

6. There will be a query section after the each lesson covering objective based questions
from all lessons.

7. The final part contains subjective questions based on the learners understanding of the
lessons
