Number Sense
1 Absolute Value The distance a number is from zero
2 Cubed number Number to the third power
3 Estimate To approximate a value without being exact (reasonableness)
4 Exponent The “little” number that tells how many times the base is a factor in a
multiplication problem.
5 Factor Numbers multiplied together to get a product
6 Integers The set of Whole Numbers and their opposites
7 Multiple The products of a specific number when it is multiplied by the Natural Numbers.
EX: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15...
8 Natural Number Any positive number starting at 1 and going to infinity
9 Percent Ratio given out of 100
10 Proportion An equation that shows that 2 ratios are equivalent
11 Ratio Comparison of 2 numbers using division (written in these forms 2 to 3, 2:3 or ⅔)
12 Round Adjusting a number or answer to a specific place value
Geometric/Measurement
20 Acute Triangle Triangle where all three angles are less than 90º
21 Adjacent angles Angles that share a ray (side) and a common vertex. They do not overlap.
22 Area Region inside of a two-dimensional figure
32 Equilateral Triangle Triangle with ALL three sides and angles are congruent
41 Perpendicular Lines Two lines that intersect and form four right angles. Two lines whose slopes are
opposite reciprocals. (i.e. 2 and -½)
22
42 Pi Relationship between circumference and diameter of a circle (3.14 or 7 )
43 Polygon A closed flat figure with straight sides
44 Prism A solid with two congruent parallel bases with remaining faces forming
rectangles
45 Quadrilateral Any four sided polygon
46 Radius Distance from center of the circle to the edge
51 Right Triangle Three sided polygon where any 2 sides form a 90º angle
60 Vertex A point of an angle, polygon, or solid where two or more lines meet
61 Vertical Angles Congruent angles that are formed when two lines intersect. (share the vertex
but are across from each other)
62 Volume of a Prism V = Bh where B = area of the base
63 Volume of a V = 31 Bh where B = the area of the base
Cone/Pyramid
Algebraic Concepts
The grouping of addends or factors does not change their sum or product (a +
64 Associate Property b) + c = a + (b + c) or (ab)c = a(bc)
65 Coefficient The numerical value found in front of a variable and represents multiplication
Changing the order of addends or factors does not affect their sum or product a
66 Commutative Property + b = b + a or a(b) = b(a)
67 Constant A number that stands on it own and has a fixed value
To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside
68 Distributive Property the parentheses
69 Equation Combination of letters, numbers, and operations WITH an equals sign
70 Expression Combination of letters, numbers, and operations WITHOUT an equals sign
The inverse of the Distributive Property. Dividing out the common factor of
71 Factoring Expressions each term.
Identity Property of The sum of any number and zero is equal to the original number7 + 0 = 7 (n + 0
72 Addition = n)
Identity Property of The product of any number and one is equal to the original number 8·1=8 or
73 Multiplication b·1=b
Inverse Property of
74 Addition The sum of opposite numbers always equals zero
Inverse Property of
75 Multiplication The product of number and its reciprocals always equals 1
Terms with the same variable raised to the same exponent. Constants are like
76 Like Terms terms
77 Linear Equation An equation when graphed that forms a line
The rules to follow when more than one operation is used in an expression
78 Order of Operations (PEMDAS)
79 Percent of Change The percent a quantity changes from the original amount
80 Variable A letter which represents a value that can change depending on the equation
Zero Property of
81 Multiplication The product of any number and zero is ZERO
Data Analysis/Probability
82 Circle Graph
Complementary
83 Events Two events where their probabilities add up to 1 or 100%
Dependent Compound
84 Events More than one event whose outcomes are affected by each other
Experimental
85 Probability The probability of an event occurring as determined by performing the event
86 Favorable Outcomes The outcome(s) wanted from an event
Fundamental Used to find the total number of outcomes of compound events. Take each individual
87 Counting Principle events outcomes and multiply them together.
88 Independent Events More than one event whose outcomes are not affected by each other
89 Outcomes All possible results of an experiment
The possibility of an event happening (the probability of an event and its complement
90 Probability always equal 1)
91 Theoretical Probability The probability of an event occurring as determined by known characteristics or facts
