Protection for HV line bay - 03 (LE3)

1. Main protection (described in clause 5.8.4)

Main protection is provided by distance relays (abb REL650).

Requirements
a. PUTT
b. POTT
c. EARTH FAULT SETTINGS IN TERMS OF THE POSITIVE SEQUENCE
IMPEDANCE.
d. Tripping signal given before 30ms of fault occurrence
e. Distance time step characteristics
 3 forward distance-time step characteristic
 1 reverse time step characteristic
f. Lowest setting shall permit under reaching of the protected line and
highest setting shall enable the longest adjacent circuit in the forward
direction to b fully covered when there is a maximum fault current in
feed at the remote end bus bar.
g. Characteristic for measuring elements for earth faults shall be
quadrilateral
h. Characteristic of the measuring elements for inter-phase faults may be
quadrilateral- lenticular or circular
i. ZONE 2 and 3 continuous time delay setting range of 0-1 seconds and 0-
3 seconds respectively
j. Power swing blocking elements
k. Line check feature
l. Trip on reclose
m. Stub protection
n. Protection from high resistance earth faults. Directional earth fault
feature
o. Broken conductor protection
p. Auto reclosing
 Single phase fast reclosing
 3 phase delayed auto reclosing
 Check synchronizing relay
 The syncchrocheck relay shall only release a closing command to the
related CB if the voltages at two sides of the open CBs r
synchronous.
 This must occur for adjustable time period before close command is
executed
q. Breaker failure relay
r. Disturbance recorder
s. Alarms
t. Distance to fault will be displayed
u. LCD 16*2 for display
v. Main protection tripping connected to the trip coil 1 of the CB.
w. 2 serial interfaces/ 4 profiles

2. Backup protection (described in clause 5.8.5)

Back up protection is over current and earth fault protection. It is provided by REC 650.

1. Overcurent and earth fault relay

1) Separately mounted 3 phase OC and earth fault IDMT elements of numerical type

Each IDMT element has separate trip and alarm contacts and separate trip indicators

should be connected to the trip coil 2 of the CB

2. Directional earth fault protection

Should be integrated to the main protection relay. (used for high resistance earth fault detection).

3. Bus bar protection ( 5.12)

Bus bar protection is provided by REB 500BU relay.

1. Must detect all interphase and phase to earth faults

2. Operating time less than 1 cycle  20ms
3. CT saturation detection to stop operating for through faults
4. Should include end fault protection
5. Self monitoring
6. Bypass switches
7. Stability for maximum through faults and 125% over load -calculation
(a) Breaker failure protection
A numerical type BFP shall be provided
